I use the safety rods. I've had a Sharpmaker of some variation for almost fifteen years (I think), and the safety rods have a number of dings in them. Those dings could have been in my hand.
There's a knife dealer in downtown Los Angeles, named Ross Cutlery. A guy there told me that most of their sharpening service was done on a belt--not the kind on your pants, but an electric one. But he said for personal use, he recommended the Sharpmaker. He got out his own, and I noticed he'd modified it to include little knobs on the ends of the safety rods. He thought that added extra precaution.
I don't have that feature on mine, but I only use it a couple times a week.
