New really picky Spyderco fan: Should I get a second PM2?

We find the larger knives are a much smaller market. The Police 4 is a very niche market, but we believe it's large enough and longevity is good. The Shaman is pretty heavy duty and a larger one would be be a larger package. I'm not saying no, "Never say never". We'll watch the model and you to see how the model evolves. You are a real source of information because most of you are passionate and knowledgeable about blades.

Hi Srtr, Soc_monki,

I personally like the Shaman, but I'm biased. My recommendation was based on BJ's mention of liking larger blades. I like the longer blade of the P4 because it's just more functional, cutting an apple, etc. When I designed the Shaman, I put the artificial limitation of blade length and legality, which is 3.5" in most of the country, at this time.

Hey Sal!

I could see my Native Chief slicing an apple pretty well... Much better than the Shaman. However I could also get behind a Shaman XL! I've been quickly falling in love with blades 3.75-4.25 inches... Thank goodness I live where there is almost no restrictions!

Thats a really good suggestion. Its a knife thats been on my list for a while. The titanium would be impervious to isopropyl alcohol and LC200N certainly isn't going to patina.

The ultimate would be the sold out Copper PM2. Copper kills microbs somehow and also is impervious to isopropyl alcohol. The knife is still available on the secondary market. I'd assume that in the future we'll see something similar, maybe with Brass or Titanium, however thats a guess and possibly wishful thinking.
Wanna remind that alcohol does no damage to non coated SS blades, just affects Spyderco's black DLC coating for some reason. It has no effect on any of my CS black DLC knives. Hence, my original post of contemplating getting another PM2 wave in satin.
You might also consider the yojumbo or canis. They’re both tactical-styled wharncliffes with the compression lock. Not sure on price though. There’s aftermarket options to add a hook to the holes of many spydies to act as an Emerson opener, if that’s a requirement.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm not sold on Janich's "tactical wharncliffe" just yet. Again, my humble opinion only. I know some of its tactical qualities have been proven through tests and research. Also, I've seen the wave mods and they make the already wide profile of a typical Spyderco knife even wider. No thanks. I personally think the manufactured wave design on the PM2 wave is perfect, even better than the original Emerson. Interesting note, I wear gym shorts primarily around the house and I like to carry a folder clipped to the waistband of my shorts, not pocket, and the PM2 wave actually waves open drawing from my gym shorts waistband. Love that bonus feature. I have a modded CS American Lawman that I preferred to carry in my gym shorts waistband but it doesn't deploy when drawing from waistband.
Look at a Native Chief if you haven't already.
Awesome. Didn't know about the Native Chief till you mentioned it. Just wish it wasn't a:(. Sorry guys. I mentioned I was picky right? Well for hundreds of dollars I think consumers can be picky.

  • Sal, please make larger knives!!! No, people! Please buy more large Spydercos!! The Manix 2 XL is one of my all time favorite knives. IMO, it's Spyderco's best tactical design. The handle is fabulous in every way with every minute detail from the jimping in all the right places, the right texture of jimping, and the ergos, man...the ergos. Random question, but when in my packaging of the black PM2 wave, in the letter from Spyderco it mentions the tactical-minded design of that knife and the all black hardware for light discipline. I'm curious because it's not all black. The middle bar is uncoated as are the liners. First I thought, well it probably made some practical sense to not coat all the hardware black but then I looked at my black Manix 2 XL and all the hardware is black, that middle frame bar, even the liners. Just found it odd and wondering if there's a story behind it :).

Yes larger knives, the only worry is the cost.

What about the Manix 2 XL? I think it's the most reasonably/understandably priced Spyderco. Even as a "budget buyer", I have no regrets having paid $180 for my black DLC Manix 2XL. Kind of makes me wonder now why the black DLC base model PM2 is only $15 less (at most respected retailers) for a much smaller knife in every way. I'm far from an SME in manufacturing of knives so I'll just leave it at that.

Point is, if Spyderco can sell an amazing big knife like the Manix 2 XL at $160-$180 (retail price), I don't see why they wouldn't/couldn't sell other big knives around that price point.

Hi BJ,

We're always involved in CQI ( Constant Quality Improvement ) for every model. These changes are based on what we learn from our own testing or from our customers. As far as cost per size, the labor is close. In fact some smaller knives require more mfg cost.

All the more reason to make more XL models! Very wishful/hopeful thinking here :).

Hi BJ - I may have misread but it seems from your thread that the costs of things is your main source of satisfaction, with the litem having the lower cost being of greater value to you. If that is the case there are tons of workable knives like the CS's you mentioned that are less expensive than a Spyderco that should make you satisfied with your expenditure.

Myself, I value a good working tool what allows me to accomplishes the job efficiently day after day with little maintenance. That is why I carry a Spyderco GB 1 folder. This is my personal bias.

I have and will continue to purchase CS knives. I splurged on my first Spyderco (Manix 2 XL) to see what all the hype was about. I may be contradicting myself throughout this thread, but yes I do consider myself a budget buyer. I can't ever see myself paying more than...say $250 for a folder. I respect Spyderco and Sal and understand business... it's an infamous brand built on decades of high quality products. Like Gordon Ramsey make a $100 cheeseburger and people will buy it, Spyderco can release a PM2 with purple G10 for $200 and it will sell out in days. I get it.

I guess I'm admitting, I got bit by the bug. I love my Manix and the spydie-hole and I'm a fidgeter so I find myself playing with a Spyderco more than any knife I have.

I know that there are many other options out there for knives with comparable quality, materials, function, etc. at cheaper price points. (I also own a couple CIVIVIs). I suppose I'm just venting about the prices of some Spyderco knives. I think the Manix 2 XL is relatively well priced and I don't regret paying $180 for it. I'm openly, honestly a little sour about paying $175 for my black PM2 wave. Don't mean to come off as complaining. This is a forum open to opinions so I'm just voicing my opinions.

I think I said it already, but really I'm just trying to convince Sal to make more "big" knives like the Manix 2 XL at the sub $200 price point :D.

I'd love more Manix2 XL knives in various steels.

The Para3 didn't do much for me. Stopped at one.

Or how about even different blade shapes like they do with the PM2?? I would snatch up a waved Manix 2 XL in a second. And yeah I know about the mods but that makes the knife way to wide in the pocket. I'm talking about the Spyderco designed wave. I think this is an amazing design.
