Hey all,

I just got my new Ritter Grip (exciting!). It feels awesome in my hand. Man does this knife fit in your grip. Smooth deployment and nice jimping.

However, there are some issues. There is blade play (gasp!). Not much, but it is more than noticeable. Also, the pocket clip is totally scuffed up. Looks very used. The box came dented as well!

On a less noticeable note, there seems to be some grime in the jimping. Could be from my hand since I held it for a few minutes, but I'm not sure.

I've included pictures of the box and clip. Check em' out, let me know what you think. I bought this from the only dealer I know of - aeromedix.com, let me know what you guys think of this dealer as well. Could I have gotten a used knife?

Blade play can be adjusted by tightening the pivot with a torx bit (little at a time). Grime in jimping? I'd wash it out & forget about it. :)

You can tighten the pivot screw for the play.
I've heard BM will send you a new clip free.
The grime can easily be cleaned with a toothbrush and 409 or something similar.
I don't know what to tell you about the box IMO it's bothersome but not a big deal.

EDIT Just noticed Cviz got there first whoops

Some of the finishes that Benchmade puts on the clips can be a little splotchy. That one is particularly bad but if you are going to use it, it will end up worse than that eventually. Aeromedix is the only company that sells the ritter grips and I have never heard of anyone having a problem with them. I highly doubt they sold you a used knife and I'm sure if you called them they would replace it for you. But if you are going to be using it I personally would put it in my pocket and forget about it. You will have to pay to ship it back plus, even worse, be without your new toy knife for a week or two.

As was mentioned Benchmade will send you a new clip if at some point down the road you want a better looking one. It doesn't look like there is a major problem with it so I say if you like it, then start using your awesome new knife.

If that's rust I see on the top of the clip, I'd contact Aeromedix and tell them or email them that pic and you probably could just have a clip sent out instead of returning the whole knife. That may be what you want to do though (exchange it)??

I just sold mine a few weeks ago on the exchange and it had a kinda funky clip paint job, but no rust or primer showing. Your call though right? :) Pic is a NIB Ritter Grip.

Something I do sometimes is sand the clip and put a satin finish on it. It is stainless steel so shouldn't rust and I like having a different finish on some knives. Doing little things like that can be fun and is a way to give it some personalization. Just another option...

IMO that is one of the good clips, not as shinny as the others but IMO that finish is much tougher.Does not matter to me anyway as I polish or bead blast about all of my clips. The pivot has a sweet spot,if you have trouble with it staying at the right tightness put a tiny spot of blue lock tight on the pivot screw.

BTW if you get another clip I would love to get that one form you.

If it makes you feel any better, I ordered 2 of M4 Ritter grips and the clips looked terrible but I highly doubt they were used.

If I bought a "new in the box" knife from a dealer and it arrived in that condition I would have sent it back and asked for a replacement. (after I called them and told them about the clip, blade play, and grime) That knife should have never made it past quality control.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't know about the play or grime but that clip coating is made that way.Not to long ago most BMs came with it.It does not look that great but wears great,it also polishes up nice. The BENCHMADE is stamped in and shows well when polished.I have one of the shinny black clips with the painted on name on my mini grip, those clips show wear in no time and if you strip it the BENCHMADE name is gone.
Here is one of those flat black clips after being polished.

Any blade play can be eliminated with a combination of pivot tensioning and lubrication.
This thread may help.

Regarding the clip, my recent M4 RSKs have the new style clip. The finish of mine was very rough around the edges. I took the clips off and sanded off the burrs.
The new style of finish wears better with time.
The chipped paint look of the old style clips did not look great after they had been carried for a while.

backpackboy I have one of the shinny black clips I will trade you for yours.

I say return the knife back and get a new one. The clip shouldn't look like that at all, there shouldn't be grime and as for the box, it's all right as long as the contents are fine, who uses the box in EDC :-). I can't tell if the clip has rust or just scuffs, but my BM grippy has a painted black clip, and i had gotten an extra flat black older style clip to put on it, it looks nice and wears in nice.

A disturbing thread. All the more so because I was thisclose to ordering a mini Ritter Grip from that dealer.

Think I'll hold off.

Had just called to see if there were any coupons or free shipping. There was not. (An earlier Candlepower Forums coupon was said to be good for 30 percent off!)

I know I'm bucking the tiger's odds by posting this but I much preferred my large Pardue Grip in 154 with a slick finish, sleek lines and $68 to my door.

Ended up selling both because the handles bugged me. Especialy the RSK MK1 that I posted a picture of above. $125 for a hollow plastic handled knife with a crappy finish on the blade, cruddy pocket clip, blade play and off centered in the handle. (I'm not a stonewash guy - I found that out in a hurry).

If I'm going to spend $125 - give me a Military in G-10 or a BM 710 any day.

Do I think they're good knives? Yeah, okay but nothing special at all. :(
