New Saver Salt..a little disappointed?

Hi all,
Got the saver salt! I'm happy about that. Very happy. It's extremely lightweight, steel feels very nice, color is awesome, lockup is solid, opening is smooth and easy. Love the big spyderhole.
But, I'm not sure if my expectations were too high or what, but I'm not altogether happy with the edge. I got the serrated version and it only cuts one way. The serrations are only on one side and while cutting straight up/down is great, side to side is not so great. If i hold the knife in my right hand with the serrations on top facing left, I can cut (not well) right to left. But if I turn it over and cut away from me, like I'm stripping bark off a stick, it doesn't do so hot. Was I expecting too much? I knew that the serrations wouldn't be quite as good as slicing and such as plain edge, but I'm not overly impressed with this.
I'm not blaming or criticizing Spyderco, I just want to know if this is how I should have expected this to be. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks Gray.

Was I expecting too much?

Yes. Plain edges are better at some things, serrations are better at others. Expecting serrations to do things, like stripping bark, as well as a plain edge is expecting too much. Just as expecting a plain edge to cut through heavy nylon rope as well as a serrated edge would be expecting too much.

You need to pick a blade type to match the chore, or try a combination edge (which some people fell doesn't do either job well).

By the way, most serrated blades are ground with the serrations on only one side of the blade. The side they are ground on would cause the blade to cut away from the body if used by a right handed person. Of course you might find a few knives ground with the serrations on the reverse side or even both side - but these are the exception.

Hope this helps some.

FWIW, all Spyderco's serrated blades are ground like that. As a lefty, I find it great, if somewhat amusing, that they chose to appeal to right handed folks sense of the aesthetic by putting the serrations on the side they look at, since they work better for those of us who are left handed. :D

LOL! That's kind of what I thought, that a lefty would be able to use it better than me. :) I still think it's going to be a good knife, I just need to get used to it.
Thanks guys.

I've always been of the opinion that Spyderco (and pretty much every other company) grinds their serrations on the wrong side for right handed people. Probably easier to sharpen, but not to cut with.

That's why if I intend to use it I set up my Sharpmaker and sharpen both sides up a bit. :)
