New scales for your delica?

Hey all, just wondering if any of you have done aftermarket work on your delica that changed the scales?

Im planning to attempt to make some homemade micarta and create scales out of that to slab onto the delica in exchange for the frn ones.

Has anyone tried this?
I have a meadowlark in g10 and have disassembled it numerous times to clean, and found the task pretty easy.

Are the liners (lets aussume delica 4 if it even makes a differance) somewhat "inbedded" or nested in the scales? or are they lapped onto of each other?

Im looking at my D4 and the answer is yes. it looks like the scales are "hollowed" out so that the steel liners sit inside of them, and as such are flush with the rest of the interior of the handle. Hope this helps.

If you get a G-10 Delica it has full liners and is much easier to work on, the FRN ones have nested liners.

Its obviously much easier to just make new scales out of your chosen material to replace the standard ones on the G-10 D4.
If you have access to a milling machine you could mill out a recess for the nested liners on the FRN Delica but it will obviously
be more work and you would have to get it spot on for it all to fit properly.

Now where's the challenge in using a milling machine?

How bout a Dremel an hands ~;-)

It's a job! I won't do it again!
I started out to inlay the D4's liners and gave up(inG11). I did complete the task, but without liners. I also made a new filler/spring holder out of steel because that flimzy FRN one is too hard to work with.

Not easy! Good luck.

VERY impressive!

Wonder if anyone has ever tried making scales to match the scales of a nested liner knife, then taking a sheet of micarta or CF the thickness of the liners, tracing the outline of the nested liner on it, then gluing the thin sheet onto the scale. I've thought about trying that when the FRN Stretch hits the streets. :D

Deacon, yes that system works, but
The problem is matching(transfering) the holes. They must fit closely.
It's a problem because the liners have "D" holes and if you drill thru them the
"KEY" effect is gone and pins will turn.
By the time the STRETCH FRN is out I will figure out a way to do it, because I want to change the sales as well. The Delica is a small knife, it can get by with G10 alone, but the Stretch needs more backup.

Just picked up a Delica 4 FRN for my wife. It is great, but I should have spent the extra to get the G10 version. Any chance Spyderco will make full liners and scales for it as an accessory? Maybe the plant where the Tenacious is made could make them. Propbably not, but here is hoping.
Cheers

edit: Nice job gull wing!

gull wing, great mod on that Delica! How's the lockup and action? Good job on that.:D:thumbup:
