Re: Photos Added. Wow ! not very good at all. i have a whole bunch of Rough Riders and Steel Warriors. Everyone of them has a much better fit that is showing in your pics. in fact, in some of them you really have to look to see the blade spine/spring interface and none of them have spring/liner gaps. So it's very disappointing to receive a Schatt & Morgan, top of the line production knife, with such a poor fit. I'm not trying to "rub it in", i feel for you. it's very disappointing and makes it very difficult to support Queen by buying any of their current production unless you can handle the knife in person first.

I definitely agree with Roland. It's a beautiful pattern, but I would have sent that one back.
I own quite a few Queen and S&M slippies, and none of them have issues like yours.

I agree, those gaps would have put me off a bit. Although I probably would have tried to fix them myself. (But I am dumb like that :p )

That's a great looking pattern, Ed; one that I've been on the fence about since you first brought it to my attention, but I don't think I've ever seen a premium slipjoint with spring/liner gaps quite so pronounced (and I'm not just doggin' ya for the stag crack gripes, either :p). I'd probably ask the dealer to swap that one for a sample with a little less light shining through the handle, but then, I hung onto my ol' cracker...

BUT the top of the tang rides just shy of 1/8" from the top of the spring when fully opened. Further, there is a gap (allbeit minor) say 1/64" between the spring and the liners the length of the handles on both sides. What with the low setting tang at the spring and the gap along the spring and bolster, I'd have to say the fit on this knife is fair.

What with the blemishes (although minor) this will definitely be a carrying/using knife with no thought or hesitation as to babying it.

EDIT: I am adding these photos to show the gaps between the liners and the spring and to show how in the fully opened position, the blade tang sits below the spring. I might be picky but didn't expect this from a Schatt & Morgan knife.

Well, show us a picture of it. It won't bother me a bit if you stick a picture of it in my thread unless of course you are thinking of showing it off in your own thread. Whatever the case, let's see it!!

Yes to all the above!!!!!!
And when you sight down the spine and look at the blade, the blade is bent off to the right side
But it is centered in the liners
So I don't understand!!!

Not a top line S&M File and Wire quality!!!
Annoying.....
If I was not here in Israel, I would definitely send it back to Queen
I might anyhow....

So neeman, your's has the same problems as mine?

I hadn't thought to sight down the spine with the knife fully opened to see how the blade centered until you posted about your's. Danged if the blade on mine doesn't veer off to the left and it is not centered between the liners when closed. Another minus for this knife.

Hey Rick!!! You can dog me about this knife all ya want. It won't hurt my feelings one bit.

I'm not going to send this one back to the dealer or Schatt & Morgan. Instead, I'll carry it and use it when I know that I'll need to do some really tough work while on one of the ranches I shoot at. Sure the flaws bug me as I expect a Schatt & Morgan to be better but like the cracks you mentioned on your stag, it is something I'll live with.

No babying this knife. It'll lead a tough life but not an abused life.

Oh, and by the way, that ol' cracker of your's is a darn fine looking knife.

Way too many minuses for a knife of this 'quality'!!!

I sent an email to Queen asking that they look at this thread.......

i only have a few queens so i'm far from knowledgeable. however my reads in the forum have shown an increase in blems of the f&f of the latest models, i will say the polish is really good but a chip in the handle demands a return. hopefully queen is listening since these blemishes are exactly what moves their followers to other brands.

I've been following this thread because as I said in an earlier post, I'm very interested in this pattern. In fact, I had already contacted my S&M online retailer about it and he is going to contact me when he receives his order. After reading neeman's post I think I'll hold off a while - 2 out of 2 with F&F issues is not what I would consider acceptable.

Now I am a little anal when it comes to certain areas on a knife so I just pulled my EDC Queen honey amber stag bone Trapper out of my pocket and gave it a very close look. After scrutinizing it, I can find absolutely no gaps in the liners, no blade blade play, both blades are perfectly centered and the handles are beautiful. Now, if Queen can do this with their Queen line, I don't understand why they can't do it with their premier File & Wire line of Schatt & Morgan.

I've never understood that either.

I sent an e-mail to both Queen and Schatt & Morgan with photos etc.. I was polite, to the point, and included pictures. I asked for a reply from both companies. That was yesterday evening. We'll see how long it takes to get a reply or if they reply at all.

This is not the dealer's problem. I don't expect a dealer to open every box and examine the knife in it when they get them.

I really hope both Queen and S & M reply to your emails and read this thread and then thoroughly address and resolve the problems that their employees are having.
They need to realize that their very survival is at stake.
We like Queen and Schatt & Morgan and want to buy their knives.
The current fit and finish problems will loose the majority of their customers unless they honestly admit to themselves that SERIOUS problems exist and go to whatever lengths are necessary to restore their products to truly top of the line.
Please Queen, WAKE UP ! none of us want to see this formerly esteemed USA knife manufacturer go the way of the Dodo, but Queen, you will, unless you take definitive action now.

Well, miracles do happen. I received a reply from Queen this morning asking me to send the knife back to them for repair or replacement.

I know that earlier in this thread I said (errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr typed) that I would not send the knife back but use it for hard jobs that came up from time to time.

After receiving Queen's e-mail and giving it more thought, I have decided to send it back to them for repair or replacement. As a matter of fact, it is already boxed up and I'll take it to the Post Office when I go to town for lunch. What really made me come to this conclusion was that I paid a good amount of money for the knife and I think I ought to get my monies worth.

This thread is not a condemnation of Queen or Schatt & Morgan. It is simply a report on a relatively new knife from an established manufacture that has some problems. Hopefully, Queen will make it right. We'll see.

I'm closing this thread for now. I'll post again when the knife or a substitue is returned.
