New school gear versus Old school gear?

I don't care if it's old, new, strung out, or held together by duct tape. If that son of a gun is still working, no need to replace it or buy something new. Like my grandpa said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I will never buy Mil-Spec boots or a new puffed up Northface jackets. I like my ol' Carhartt and my Justin pull-ons too much.

For me, it's a mix, pretty much like most here. I like what works, and if you ever see me hiking in the woods, I'm definitely very eclectic! :D I love newer cars, mainly because I do all my own maintenance, and always have. I pretty much stick to Hondas and Toyotas now, and can actually PLAN when I want to do maintenance, instead of doing it by the side of the road.

I'm old enough now, that if I'm wearing something "tactical", nobody mistakes me for a mall ninja. I find that very freeing, if that's a word. I want to try some older stuff like waxed cotton some day.

I will admit, I'm very nostalgic for certain smells that remind me of my days in the Army. Anyone who has been through a clothing sales store, or Army surplus and smelled old canvas will know what I mean...

I like stuff that works the way I want it to. Doesn't matter if it's new, old, or cobbled together from the two. Oh, I also like stuff that I can afford, so old school often gets the nod in that regard.

Ditto

We've all seen that there is an obvious line down the "Traditional" and "Modern" knife people, but I was wondering how far that stretched?

Are the traditionals more likely to like Carhartt jackets over Milspec jackets?

Old Honda Rancher 4 wheelers over new flashy Polaris ones?

Older wooden, straight handled rifles over pistol grips and rails?

Older Snapper Lawn mowers over the new Zero turn ones?

A pair of levis over 5.11 Tactical khakis?

A pair of Justins, or Ariats over Milspec Combat boots?

An old Leatherman PST over a SOG powerlock or the type?

Older ALICE packs over MOLLE packs?

If I could get some opinions I think it would be pretty cool. DO your likes fit one category? Are you in the middle?

First of:

Carhartt.

Ranger.

Pistol rail.

Zero turn.

Levi's.

Mill spec.

Leatherman all the way!

ALICE.

I think it doesn't matter new or old what matters is whether or not it works for YOU

For instance a compound bow vs a Traditional bow, the same result can be archived with which ever you choose It's more a matter of skill.

The difference in my opinion is the complexity a compound bow has a lot more parts than a Traditional bow.

What I'm trying to get at is its a trade off a compound bow is easy to learn on but has more parts to fail, a traditional bow on the other hand has less parts but Requires more skill to use effectively.

Do remember thats just a Analogy that i think applies to this subject.

lol i hope that made some kinda sense......

Still though what ever works for you is better!

Cheers!

There's no reason to choose. The last time I was in a gun store, a guy was buying a Glock and a Marlin lever action in 45-70. The guy behind the counter mentioned that they don't go together, and the guy buying them, said "Sure they do. The Glock is for concealed carry, and the Marlin is for fun."

I think it was a polite way of telling someone to mind their own business.

Use what you like, don't worry about ANYONE else.

Old school all the way. I don't even know what milspec boots are or 5.11 pants are, and don't want to learn. Everything I want as far as clothing is in a vintage 1962 LL Bean or Miller Stockman catalog. As far as firearms-- revolvers, lever action rifles, and double barrel shotguns.

Mostly old school. I do like molle packs and cargo pants though. Use both kind of boots. Got a Honda Rancher, wood guns, 1 autoloading pistol (1911 of course), 3 revolvers, lever guns, bolt actions, single shots.... Carhartt coats (except my camo)

Mixed bag here as well. Most of the knives I carry are slipjoints or SAKs, occasionally a Spyderco Dragonfly. My favorite watch, ever, is mt G-Shock Mudman. I don't own a gun (combination crummy California CCW regs, and wife doesn't want one I the house), but, from the few times I've rented a gun at a range, my preference falls toward revolvers in the 9mm variety. I drive a 2008 6 cylinder Honda Pilot, and miss my 2002 Tacoma four banger. I have a flat screen tv, and get by without HD, a couple dozen channels, and about 3 hours of actual viewing time each week. I make my cup of mud with a French press, and am typing this on an iPad because I can't stand sitting in front of a monitor more than the 9 or 10 hours per day I already do so at work. I'm not really old school or new school; I'm just me.
