I have only had this new small 21 for a week and I was wondering if the lockbar is supposed to be this far over?

.. it is a brand new sebenza.

what no answers?

I have done several searches on this question on the archives and no information.

I don't have a 21, but I do have several sebbies - and my take is that it appears to be within normal range. It looks to be to be about 75% across, and I've heard that is the upper end of normal.

Edited to add that Dave is FAST! Beat me to it....

Greetings: I will share what limited knowledge I have regarding the Sebenza lock bar position. Chris Reeve's Sebenza construction is deceptively simple but, for a folding knife it is highly precise. A small repositioning of the top or bottom plates will result in a noticeable change in the lock bar position as it seats on the blade tang. I have been playing with my small left handed 21 for about a week while reading this forum's archives back to 2002. If you have not disassembled, cleaned and lubed your new Sebenza I suggest you do so. The process of taking it apart and putting it back together will likely result in a positional change in the fully seated lock bar. I believe the acceptable range for factory specifications is between 50 and 75 percent contact of a fully seated lockbar relative to the blade tang. I was initially concerned with mine as it appeared to be at about 80 to 90 percent of its maximum travel. Disassembly and reassembly changed this to no more than 60 percent as it is now. Once the screws are tightened the lock bar position is VERY stable in it's current location. OldDude1

Okay I will take it apart. Thanks for the advice but why does it say this on the FAQ?:
We know that a lot of owners of Sebenzas like to adjust the lock and the pivot etc. but we DO discourage this. When we ship the knives, they work the way they are intended and modifications usually end up with something not working right!

Is it sticky when you try to release it? Or is it just the appearance that bothers you? I'd not worry too much about it unless it is sticky - 'course, you can always return it for adjustment! CRK are some really great folks!!

You said it all and hit the nail right on the head. 50-75% is correct and normal; and when taking them apart the position will change. I have never had one change for the worse. Most of the time its better. I have noticed on my large regular that I am heavily using it for a task, from squeezing the handle, it will go even furthur sometimes, but when closing it and reopening, it goes back to the normal position. I have several regular sebenzas, the 2- 21's I had, I traded as I like the regular profile better. They are all in the 50-60% range. Sometimes go to 70-75% if being heavily used as stated above. My advise, use it, unless it gets to the point where it is touching the other slab, then I would contact CRK, other than that, Use It and Enjoy It. They are Tough knives

Colubrid: I would not even pretend to compare my knowledge of knife making and tuning with that of the Chris Reeve staff. However, I do not think that disassembly and reassembly constitutes actively adjusting the lockup. Because or the precise tolerances involved in the design construction and function of the Sebenza frame lock, a minute positional change in the point of blade tang to lock bar face contact will change the percentage of lock bar travel. There are several threads addressing this situation and it possible remedy scattered throughout the forum archives. OldDude1

Yeah, that looks about right. My classic (2003) is about the same. Enjoy the knife, don't worry about it.

Wow two threads for this?

Your sebbie lock up looks great. I posted a little more in your other thread in general.

BTW they do NOT get anymore "quality" than CRK! ;)

I didn't get any responses on this forum so I posted on the Genral forum. Since then, i got responses here. But to late to delete.

Mine was the same.. and When squeezed would easily reach the the other side.. And that was new..
I sent it in and it came back the same..
Fix it yourself is...
Loosen the three screws just a bit.. so they are not snug.. Keep the knife closed and push the lock bar side up with the thumb and pull down on the non-locking side with your remaining fingers.. And then tighten the screws up...
I think that made sense.. It fixed mine temporarily for a month while I carried it..
Moved back to about 50%

Looks good to me.....
However.... feel free to send it to me for closer inspection.
I should be able to return it to you in a few years...
It will take a long time to make sure I inspect it correctly........... :D
