Hey guys, I'm in need of some advice from you Sebenza owners.

Picked up a new small sebenza 21 with micarta inserts. The knife feels absolutely amazing in the hand and is beautiful to look at. The problem is that I'm having a hard time carrying it as an EDC. Afraid that I will lose it, ruin it, etc. Did any of you baby your sebenza before using it and how did you get over you fear of losing/damaging a $400+ knife. Also, I've heard theses knives are not supposed to be flicked open. To me that's part of the fun, so why carry a sebenza then? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

Put it in your pocket and leave it there unless you need to use it:) It's always worked for me for all my blades!

I hear you. It is hard to get that first snail trail and to start cutting on that factory edge. The best advice I can offer is to just put it in your pocket and carry and use it everyday. It will get the trails sooner rather than later and then you will welcome them. Each mark will be a well earned badge of honor.

As far as losing it - don't. Buy two or three more just in case though. The pocket clip is designed to have two points of contact which makes it rather secure in a pocket. Treat it like your wallet or cell phone.

Try not to worry about damaging it. Just don't pry with it, use it as a screwdriver, etc... Treat it like the tool it is; a knife. I also wouldn't worry about flicking it. Just don't use your wrist. Only open it strong enough to get it to lockup securely.

Congrats on your first CRK! A Micarta 21 is one of the best EDC CRK's out there. Great choice!

Welcome to BFC jmel and owning a CRK!!!!
I have enough CRK's that I do baby some I carry, others not so much. The micarta inlay is my favorite. It's the only inlay that CRK will blast the slabs to bring it back to new status. So, don't be afraid to get a few character marks on it. If you think it looks good now, it will be sexy with wear.
I normally don't clip carry my CRK's for fear of losing it, in my line of work it's easy to lose a knife. To get around that, I use a pocket sheath for carry. It limits the snail trails and it won't slip out of my pocket.
Sebenza's aren't meant to be flicked open with wrist action, I've read that some indeed do thumb flick theirs open. Personally, I've got flippers if I want to flip one open, but my CRK's are always opened with the thumb lugs in a steady motion.
Use it, enjoy it, it's begging to be used....

I've owned a couple of Sebenzas in my life and have heard the same thing- what exactly is the damage done to the mechanism by 'flicking' the knife open from a construction standpoint ?
I can't be sure as I haven't owned my last Seb for a couple of years but I seem to remember flicking it open at least once or twice with no visible damage observed, obviously damage by this kind of usage is cumulative. Has anyone experienced any kind of lock failure attributable to flicking misuse ?

Sorry for the highjack.

....so why carry a Sebenza....
*To cut things with.
* It's not delicate, use it.
* The Micarta is the best they make, feels great in hand.

Congrats on your good choice of knives.:)

You'll be conscious of every little nick, ding, scratch and mark for a while then it just all just fades into not caring as you become friends with your new knife. I think we are all pretty much the same with a new thing, I know I am. :)

Too true

It is not that CRK's shouldn't be "flicked", but rather, it is the opinion of Mr. Reeve that no folder should be flicked. However, a Sebenza would be the one to flick if one must flick - they are one of the simplest and toughest production knives made.

You can flick it as long as you don't "wrist" flick it. Just forget about the price and enjoy your knife ;)

I used to be worried about damaging my first Sebenza...then I realized that it will take a whole lot of abuse before you do any damage that is beyond cosmetic.

Wearing and using a watch that costs ridiculously more than my Sebenza also put things in perspective for me. :)

Ahh, got it, in the same way one shouldn't dry fire a firearm..

Exactly... The only time you should wrist flick these knives is one time after reassembling the knife to seat it properly.

As far as losing the knife, have you ever lost a knife before? Most people don't lose any knife they own. Obviously, it does happen though. Because of this, I carry all of my CRKs in a leather pocket sheath just to make sure I don't lose it. Works for me.

Am I the only person who thinks it takes longer to bunch my thumbnail behind that pointy little stud, load it up, then flick it out rather than just ride the stud out with my thumb? Thumbs can move pretty fast. Same goes for the Umnumzaan. Flicking just seems pointless IMO.

I don't put my fingernail behind the stud to flick out... just the top of my thumb. It takes a little to get the positioning in your hand right, once you do, its money.

Opening my small sebenza and zaan has made me flick my other knives out easier.

OP, carry it, fondle it, use it and don't worry about it. You have an exceptional built knife backed with an exceptional warranty and exceptional customer service. You're covered

^^^ This! If you want to flip a knife open for fun, get a Hinderer.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Well, let's be honest, with the 25 you need to flip it for a week to smooth that puppy out:)

I love Hinderers though- they're fun and wicked tough for hard use, though I can honestly say I'll probably never ever take it to the edge of hard use in my camping activities:)

I know I disliked those first few handle marks, but those thoughts faded fast.
The Micarta version like yours looks even better after carried IMO.

I won't get started on flicking, and will just say I see no reason for it myself(YMMV). Pick you up a cheaper knife to flip would be my suggestion.

Here's one I picked up at the Micarta's debut at Blade 2005. I think it looks better after some carry time.

I did my best to beat the crap out of one when I was deployed, and could swear that knife was laughing at my efforts! :o
