Well, after some unexplained wandering, my Sharpmaker showed up on my porch today. I ordered it specifically to get my sons into sharpening. I have been using bench stones since the early 70s, but my sons have never sharpened a knife, and have not been very confident when I told them that it is simply a matter of controlling the angle. My younger son, the one who is a knifeknut, always expresses amazement at the edges I can get.
I pulled the Sharpmaker out of the box, and my younger son pulled out his Native, which someone had borrowed and left with a pretty bad edge. I showed my son how a few strokes with the coarse, followed by the fine, would bring up a good edge (he really likes how he can control the angle just by keeping the blade perpendicular to the table). After a minute he took over, and likes it. So now he can sharpen his own knives.
Then I showed him how to use the strop to finish the edge and get it to the true hair popping stage. Maybe he will get good at sharpening after all.
