New Sharpmaker Rod: something between current diamond/CBN and medium ceramic

Industrial supply houses sell 1/2" triangular prisms in various materials and grits. I have some Norton coarse and medium India stones as well as some 320 grit Rubies. Most are offered in the 6" length which is a little shorter than 7" Sharpmaker stones.

I'm a long time user and fan of the SM and have likewise wondered about this gap in the SM system. A while back I asked about it here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ot-a-full-grit-progression-for-the-Sharpmaker and then in the Spydie sub-forum here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ot-a-full-grit-progression-for-the-Sharpmaker. You can see Sal's comments at the time in the latter thread.

I would still love to see at least one "in between" rod happen.

Thanks man. Interesting reading!

I agree . The grit gap is too large and that's why I use coarse and fine diamond plates against the rods. The diamond rods are just too aggressive IMO.
I'd buy a set if they come out.

Agreed. It would be nice to have something between the existing diamond & medium ceramic.
The grit i will leave up to the experts, as the sharpmaker is the only sharpening equipment i use...

I think if the grit size was labeled on all the SM rods that folks would buy additional rods to fill out their set.

That's a good idea. Don't know how you'd do it, but it would also give you a better sense of what you are doing when sharpening. At least to those of us who are still fairly new to it, like me.

+1 to labeling the grits. I think one thing that's gone into the design and appearance of the Sharpmaker is simplicity, mainly for non-knife people. Your average person can use the SM to keep their household implements sharp, knives or otherwise, but they don't care about grits or more rod options. However, if it were realistic from a manufacturing standpoint, it would be nice if Spyderco could make a SM Pro, with labeled grits and maybe comes with a few more rods as well. There could even be a highest-end version with literally all the rods.
In general though, I'm all for more rod options, even if I never end up buying or using them. It's just a matter of if Spyderco can make it work from a business standpoint.

I think it would be like using different grades of sandpaper. If you need an aggressive 60 grit or a fine 600 grit it would be nice to have the selection choice.
