I took a break from building on orders and got some nagging artist energy out of my head. I've been wanting to make an Arrowhead shaped sheath for quite some time. Necker-knife carry design. The knife is firmly held in place with the help of two magnets. Lined with pig skin over the magnets so no scratches. The top hole was a last minute 'how will I attach the rawhide to the sheath' idea. I dont like that - so rethinking that part. Howling wolf .. cause the full super moon over the last weekend was memorable. Overall .. I'm happy with it. Different way to carry a Runt for sure.

I can't wait to see the Camp Knife version. ;)

In all seriousness, I like the look and the use of magnets. My opinion is that magnets are way under utilized on sheath retention systems. Nice design!

But don't you have to re-magnetize the magnets after a while?

Re-magnetize? I thought that was only if you drop one really hard makes it lose it's strength. The ones on my frig have been there for years. I suppose if these lose strength, you turn it over and make it a front pocket carry. :D

A long time ago I build a leather sheath with neodym magnets aswell, if the magnets losen strengh, the knife is laying at
the floor-not so fine.
Second, if you are sharpening your knives with a wicked edge, magnetic metal dust is allover your steel parts, so you must demagnatize everything-bad idea.

Best,
Andy

How would magnetic dust get on your steel parts? These are Neodymium magnets (not ceramic) and they have been glued in place, sand-wedged between thin pieces of leather.

I've done the same glued and thin layer leather, the knife got magnetic and the metal dust from sharpening was on every steel part, knife, diamond stones, rods, screws andandand:(

Were you using a file to sharpen your knife and do you not wipe your blade down afterwards? Sounds like a LOT of metal dust .. a lot more than my shop has ever seen.

Either way, maybe my new design is not for you. :foot:

Hey Bud, I too have the Wicked Edge system, and Beast is correct that a lot of metal filings are generated, especially when re-profiling the cutting edge for the first time. If the blade is magnetized, then there would be filings adhering to it. However, the nice thing about the wicked edge is that when you re-sharpen, you apply the exact settings to sharpen the knife. Much less material is removed for all subsequent sharpening. The WE system as the primary tool comes with diamond stones. They also have water stone options where this problem would be minimized, even if the blade were magnetized from your sheath.

I always carry a neck knife on me, but I find that I use it very little. This is because I normally have at least two other knives on me when I am fully clothed. The most my neck knife sees is an occasional apple or peach when I am lounging around in pajamas. Hence, this is really more of a theoretical problem than a practical one for me. My neck knife stays sharp for a very long time, and when I do re-sharpen it, I use water stones freehand. I did use the WE water stones for the initial profile though.

I guess if I had to decide between a scratched blade and a few sticky metal filings on my Runt, I would choose the filings. Nice idea, and I think it has a place here. Any thoughts regarding trying other FB small blades besides the Runt in the neck knife sheath?

The sheath's welt is very open - not just profiled to the Runt's shape. If the blade fits into the opening, then it should fit just fine. Only one I could see an issue with is the Bow-Leg Joe style blades. That flat/straight razor tip would not sit into the pointed end of the sheath.

Thanks McVeyMac, you know what I'm talking about...

I was quite aware of what you're talking about, but I keep asking; why would you leave any trash or residue on your blade after sharpening? The way you were talking, your magnetized blades would pick up all the metal shaving around your house or shop because you make your knives wicked edge. 1. Re-profiling a Fiddleback Runt, seems odd to me. Like less than 1% of the owners here would do it. 2. Magnetized or not, wipe the crap off your blade off after sharpening or the occasional strop. Maybe in your personal experience, 'a long time ago when you were making sheaths' .. but you came across as offering nothing but criticism (based on your previous failings) with no recommendations of a fix.

So you dont approve of my use of the magnets. Got it. I'm not changing that feature based on your criticism.

Bonafide, that's one slick looking sheath! And I like your tooling. :)

I'm planning to do some Neck sheaths in the near future, but will be doing something different, that's for sure.

Obviously you have no WE, I can not clean the stones after each single stroke.

Magnetized blades- plural, I did not remember talking about?

Metal shaving around around your house or shop-you overact a little bit!

Reprofiling a fiddleback runt-no words about ever spoken.

I wrote, a long time ago I build a leather sheath with neodym magnets aswell and not a
long time ago when you were making sheats-why did you write flat wrong?

What's wrong with you, you are not able to take criticism, I have over 20 years experience with knife- and sheath making and I'm not old enough to learn, you should try also.

Thanks Heber. Much appreciated coming from you.

Rob - let me get caught up with my current orders and I'll make a few. I still want to sort out how the rawhide strap attaches.

Beast - AGAIN, you offered nothing but criticism .. and to me they're worthless without offering a fix. If you were trying to be constructive in your comments then you failed to communicate that. On a positive note, you were able to double your post count in one single thread with your 20 yrs of experience as a maker.
