New Shop, Forge!

It all looks GREAT Salem, absolutely GREAT! Is that propane tank in its final resting place? In the photos it looks like it might be kind of close to the wood stove and forges? Man I'm jealous of your setup. And a horse(s) too?! Sweet! (I'm going by your avatar and the hay in the garage.) Say, why the pony wall along the walkway along the outside of your shop?

All the best, Phil

Salem, I can't decide what I envy more, the shop or the view.:D

Thanks for sharing.

Forgot to add: The website looks good. The only thing that bugs me a little is the tiled background. I think I would like a solid color better or at least something constant throughout.

You make me sick............with envy! :D That is freakin awsome, I wouldn't know how to work in there toooooooooooooooo much room!:thumbup:

Thanks guys, some of the coolest dudes on here checked it out, I'm glad. Yep, good deduction Phil, I have a horse. Right now she just eats hay and acts like a knot head, I'm gonna saddle train her real soon here, though. I do have to move that tank out a bit when the near forge is going strong. The pony wall is so you can get a wheelbarrow of whatever (firewood, etc.) past the shop without going through and knocking tools over. The land falls steeply away right past the wall. (Remember, firewood is that stuff you have to burn sometimes when you don't live in Hawaii.)
Thanks for the advice, Patrice. I'll take a look at that. The view is largely wasted on me, the windows are so dirty and I never remember to wash them... but yeah, I love it.
TKAZ, rustic describes it all out here, life included.
Dixie, I'm already scheming on turning the hay/wood area into an extended shop- and then build more outbuildings for farm use.
Hey Jason, how's that KITH knife doing? Did you ever get any of that horse leather?
Peter r, I'm trying to go pro, dude - wish me luck.

Just make sure you have some fire suppression equipment nearby, all that plywood... If it was mine it would more than likely burn down lol

I love the shop, I wish mine had half the stuff you do. You have given me a number of ideas though. Good luck, have fun.

Looks great Salem! :)

I always say this to folks, but if you slap a coat or two of white paint on those walls, you'd be amazed at how much easier you can see the details in your work.

It's pretty easy to do, and definitely WELL WORTH the effort.

I'm real interested in your forge vent. I know it says you don't have the fan in it yet... I'm curious if you'll have any problems with it being in the same line as the fireplace exhaust???

I love the look of it, with the half drum and your old license plate. REALLY cool!

Looks like you need some angle iron bracing under your diamond plate forge table, looks like it's sagging pretty hard.

The view is amazing... I've never been to Tonasket. You ever been to Winlock??? ;) It's about 6-7 hours to here (I think).

Thanks for sharing Salem!!! :)

Nice to finally know about a bladesmith in Washington. I'm not familiar with Tonasket, so I Google-Earth mapped it. About as far north as you can be and still call yourself American. You're about 250 miles from where I live.

Nicely appointed shop. I don't share your fondness for pegboards. My dad had one in his shop, and he was very fussy about where things went. I was much less fussy, so I got yelled out a few times. I like the concept of things being on hand, though.

By the way, you might consider using a Steelcase desk as a work surface. Less flammable than wood, and comes with drawers for storage. I got mine for $1 from Harris County (TX) when I lived there. If you ever get bored with the desk you can cut it up into knives. ;)

Nick, I've got a damper in the pipe above the stove before the tee and a damper in the exhaust hood pipe as well. Hopefully, this will allow me to isolate them effectively. I don't really need to use the stove 7 months out of the year, so I'll just keep it blocked off. I have never been to Winlock, is it near Vancouver? Maybe I'll check it out when I get the chance, there is a custom knifemaker there I would like to visit/loiter around his shop some day...;)
