I have a similar exhaust setup the only problem I have right now is, Im getting tired of taking the cap off out side. Anyone have a flapper maybe, idea??? I also tried hard as I could to get a visual on sparks outside looked all clear.

What blower is that and how loud is the system? I'm planning a direct exhaust system similar to you guys, but I have the ability to use less than a foot of ducting on the exhaust to go outside (dumping it just above ground level), definitely concerned about sparks making it that far.

https://www.harborfreight.com/2-hp-industrial-5-micron-dust-collector-97869.html not to loud also have a foot switch so it ez to JUST use when grinding it moves plenty of air I crack a window just to the right of it.

Kevin,
Honestly, I can’t having my grinding/fab area sharing space with my musical instruments and rec room. I even had to seperate it from my lathe and mill. If I were in your position I would claim one bay from my 4 car garage and frame in a wall to the ceiling in order to contain the mess.
It hurts at first but after a year you won’t remember the cost and just be enjoying the benefits. Who knows, as time goes on you might be able to claim another bay!
Yeah, I'm not really high volume, but I've made maybe 25 knives in the new shop and the dust cleaning is a pain, as I figured it would be. I have been planning and purchased the material to make an enclosure. It will be a plywood sheet suspended from the ceiling over my grinding area. Mounted on top of the sheet is an exhaust fan plumbed to the exterior. This is to collect airborne dust. The walls will be 20 mil clear PVC attached to the edge of the plywood deck and hanging down to the floor. It will be somewhat movable, I won't lose much ambient light from the windows on the adjacent walls, and It should contain everything pretty well. Now I just need the time to construct it.

Kevin,
I have a window unit around the corner and 20+ feet away from any grinding. You wouldn't believe what the pre filter still catches!

Oh, I've had to clean it. Not really more often than the ones in the house. Although I don't run the unit while grinding. And I do have a pretty powerful extraction at the funnel under the belt .
