new shot gun

I *like* the H&R single barrels. I've done a fair amount of hunting with them. Very fast. You can probably get a gunsmith to set up an interchangeable choke system. i wouldn't argue with a 500 or 870, either. I do think there's something to be said for the light weight single shots, but that's up to you.

Rocketbomb,

I am not tying to hiJack the thread but most older 870's can be changed over to left handed safety pretty easy. I also have a Browning Gold Hunter that the safety was switched for a left handed shooter. This is merely for information only.

Cool, I wasn't aware of that.

My other option when I got my first shotgun was an Ithica, but it was way too big for me at the time. May still pick one up someday, they're great guns.

Riley,

I don't believe that what you are looking for is available in a package form. I know that you can gat the single shot 20 ga. In a Rossi for a very reasonable price. I also believe that you would be able to order an extra rifled 20ga slug barrel for that gun. I would say it would cost you $400.00 or less for both Gun and extra barrel.

My only experience with the Rossi Brand is my sons little combo 22/410. I will tell you that for the money, it is a sweet little set up. Actually I would recomend it for a little survival gun. I have had very good results with that gun. The fit and finish is what you would expect from a gun that cost me $139.00 with 2 diferent barrels.

Another option you may want to look into it the Remington youth combo. It comes with a rifled barrel and a barrel with chokes. I believe it is only supplied with the MOD choke tube. I just searched and found a price of $419.00 Which actually suprised me. You would be able to purchase another full sized stock for it and have a very proven design with both barrels you requested for about 5 bills. IMO a 20ga pump shotgun is a very good wilderness survival choice and will certainly fill you pot with small game.

That is my take on what you requested. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

you really can't go wrong with the 870/500 or the h&r, all really good guns for the money. on the rossi i'm 50/50 i know 2 people that have had them, 1 was great and the other had to go back a couple of times for firing pin problems. one way to go is to pick up a used h & R for cheap and have a rem choke system installed to give you more versatility for about what you'd pay for an 870. i really like the single shots it's kind of a sodbuster type of gun it you get my point, nothing fancy but it does the job. as usual if you get a chance try all and go with what you like best. let us know.

H&R makes a single-shot 20 model called the Tamer. It's supposedly weather-proof, and made for "adventurers" and such. Small, compact package. I like the look of their Survivor rifle, also.

I have a Remmy 870 "Express" 12 gauge. Composite stock. Been using it for 15 years. It has never seen a decent days treatment in it's life. It lays in the bottom of my kayak in salt water for duck hunting, I bought a hastings slug barrel for it and sit in the stand for hours in the rain. It has been dropped more than once (while empty) It is sitting in my garage right now, uncleaned from yesterday hunt. Every year I paint it with heat paint (used for barbeques and exhaust headers)

That gun has never, EVER had a misfire and has to have fired at least 1,500 rounds out of it.

That being said, if you are stuck on a single shot or just want the versatility, the Rossi barrel combo mentioned before is called the "Trifecta" 20 gauge, .243 and .22. I am probably going to pick one up myself, only I wish it came with a .223 or .308 instead of .243.
