New Slipjoint Help

It sounds like you want a larger slippie. If you're willing to wait some, I would suggest the '10 BFC knife. Also, a Case lg Stockman or Trapper in CV would also work & be well within your budget.

If you can come up with a little more $, there are some customs that come up from time to time (About $225-250 or so). Menefee comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others. Also, the Case/Bose collaborations, also over $200, but are excellent knives. Their F&F rivals that of some customs. However, the Menefees & Case/Bose are SS (ATS-34 & 154CM depending on the yr it was made).

GEC comes to mind in that they have a very good 1095 blade steel & their 3.75" Trapper seems to fit your needs.

Queen is another one, mainly because most of their models use D2 steel.

If you're just getting into slip-joints, I highly recommend maybe getting 2 or more of different patterns. That'll give you a better idea of what you like.

Maybe you know what patterns you are interested in. Are you interested in 2 blade or 3 or more blade patterns?

I know you are looking for carbon
And you have all good pointers for Queen City and GEC

But if you are interested in ATS34
Then Schatt & Morgan File and Wire series make larger knives, and the quality is excellent

bladeplay and gaps are my biggest worry since I have to buy online and cant really see before getting it lol. Its good to hear you've had good experiences with the newer ones, I shouldn't be so quick to judge maybe.

Just ask and you can get one without play or gaps. I just asked for a knife with dead center blade and solid lockup when I bought from collectorsknives and boy did he deliver. Also the CV Case Swayback Jack I bought has exteremely nice f&f. GEC are great too. The one I have is rock solid and built like a tank.

Just reading this thread, for me, one of the beauties of slipjoints is that they are not going away. Pick up some RoughRider's that appeal to you for 10-20 bucks a pop then you'll know the pattern you want and then pick up a higher quality blade. Tho for the money, those Roughies are unbeatable. But I hear great things about GEC
