New SNG cc replacing my SMF cc

Hey guys...

I know the vibe here about Strider from some members, but all that aside, this is about the knife, not what one person did or didn't say, etc.. I've recently sold off a bunch of knives that were or were meant to be some sort of every day carry. Mostly Benchmades, but a few other "higher end" production or semi-custom knives.

So, last week, my new Strider SNG CC came in that I traded a new 710 and some cash for. A little while ago I bought another SMF CC to replace the one I had lost. I had thought the SMF was too large for me before, but for whatever reason ordered another. Well, I decided this time it was too large for my every day carry.

I had been carrying my Emerson CQC-8 or the RAT Cutlery Izula but still missed the Strider. Here in Corpus, we don't have any stores that carry Strider so I usually have to go by the specs online and the SNG sounded too small at first, but now I think it is ideal.

But now that I have it, it was the best knife decision I've made. I got the CC model like the SMF, but this one has the treated titanium and the tiger-striped blade. I have to say, I wasn't sure about a striped blade, I usually don't even like black, but it's actually very nice. Maybe since it's not a "paint" coating (for lack of a better word) I can tolerate it more. The larger SMF just seemed too plain with all of the bead blasting.

Now, even though it's smaller than my CQC-8 and thinner, the blade is actually thicker and the knife just feels more solid. Lock up is perfect, centering is right on and the blade is razor sharp. Fit and finish is great for a Strider and no machine marks anywhere, unlike my SMF, although this is probably due to the blade "coating".

The blade thickness is just right for me. Not as thick as the SMF, but still thicker than most. Yet, it's not too thick and it's still a great slicer. For me, it's the perfect size. The only complaint I have is the butt of the handle is just a little too square. I can deal with it fine, I just wish it was slightly more rounded. Other than that, I'm very satisfied and the knife rides better in my pocket than any of my Emersons have.

Before I bought this, I had considered the Sebenza again since I wear a suit at times and it may be a little more appropriate when in that attire... I often see people refer to this as a "gentleman's knife", but I don't really see it that way as much as others do. If I want to carry a gentleman's knife, I'll carry a William Henry. I found a beautiful B12 that may soon be mine. The Sebenza, in my opinion, is an in between knife, not a gentleman's knife, nor a full on hard use knife (by styling). I think if anything, it may lean a little to the hard use knife, maybe... Now, I'm considering the Sebenza or the Strider PT as an additional every day knife.

As it stands, the SNG, CQC-8 and Izula are my rotated every day carry knives. The CQC-8 and SNG are the one's I'll carry when wearing jeans or similar.. The Sebenza or PT would be for in between a suit and jean - or a mixture of the two. The William Henry for when I need to dress up or on a photo shoot (I'm a photographer).

So now, I have my eye on a couple from the Strider custom line too. I'd eventually like to have a new G10 scale made for this one... maybe something like the Emersons, but with the rounded edges of the ones on there now.

For whatever reason, I was attracted to tiger-striping this time when I usually don't like it. It seems like it will wear evenly and not chip like black coatings, but I'm not sure.

For all of you Strider owners out there, how does the tiger striping and the heat-treated Titanium hold up? How does it wear? On the rare instance I buy a black coated blade (CQC-8), I hate to use it because the chipping of the black coating is just unattractive.

Kind of like a nice 1911. Bluing wears beautifully, but some of these coatings chip and wear less attractively. My SIS is wearing fine, but that could go either way. Corpus is too salty and hot for a bead-blasted SS 1911 as an everyday carry. My CDP Pro would show rust pretty easily.

So, does the heat treat and tiger striping wear easily or wear off, soften, chip (which I doubt) turn all black or all light gray, etc.??

Thanks for reading and thanks for any input! P.S. Sorry for the not-so-great pics, I was in a hurry when I originally posted these. I also sold the SMF before deciding to post, and I didn't get any side by side pics.

Thank you.. I love that SIS. I'll eventually replace in with a Wilson Professional, but it has been a much better gun than I expected. Definitely one of the nicest in the Kimber line.

Nice taste in all things EDC:thumbup:. I like the cc version of the SnG over the other production versions. GGs are nice too. I agree the SMF is too large for me.

Very nice! The black on the tiger stripes should wear and show the light gray underneath, since the whole blade it coated in black oxide and then beadblasted to give it that pattern.

I have the wire finish on my DDC SnG CC similar to the tiger stripes and it has faded very nicely from hard use. The tiger stripes on my RG SMF CC just like your SnG are holding up well and I have seen no fading from mild to medium use. If you are going with a PT next, take a look at the digi cam. It's the heat and my favorite finish, even over my stonewash SMF GG. The digi cam can take a beating and doesn't seem to mark up.

Matador-

Although I love my Strider PT dearly, I have to say that the SnG is (to me) the best all around EDC folder - in size, sturdiness and function.

Haven't gotten around to picking up an SnG CC, but that's the SnG I hope to buy next.

Nice pics Jonathan and thank you for sharing...

Cheers,
Mike

Congrats on the SNG CC!!! That is sweet.

I have & love a PT in Ranger Green with the stone washed finished. It rocks.

Politics aside, the SnG is the cats pajamas IMO. I regularly edc mine.

The stripes will wear and make the knife look tougher. Strider says they will re-stripe the knife should you care to have that done, but frown upon it as they designed the knife to be used.

The Ti holds up well - the only place I seem to have wear is where the pocket clip touches the Ti.

I have dropped it a few times on paved surfaces, which has slightly marred the checking on the G10, but nothing that keeps me awake at night.

I think you made a great decision with it. I haven't found a situation where I regretted my decision to purchase it.

Yeah, I dropped mine last night on the patio! It did almost no damage at all except a tiny little pin sized scuff near the bottom screw hole on the Titanium side.

This is the only knife I've ever owned that I was 100% happy with. There's ALWAYS something that's not perfect, whether it's too large, too small, too thin, too thick, too heavy, too light, too loose, too tight, etc. This knife is perfect for me and I would be happy with this as my only everyday knife. I have never thought that before. I might, someday, like to add different G10, but that's all in fun like new grips on my 1911's.

I'm even happy with the finish and I'll probably be happy with the way it wears. I don't use my knives all that hard. If I need a pry bar, I get a pry bar, etc.

I'd like a stonewashed or digi PT just to have, even though I don't feel the SNG is too large in any way. It's actually a good bit thinner than my CQC-8, and the CQC-8 is a great size for me. The rounded sides of the SNG cc make a huge difference. It fits my hand perfectly, works perfectly and looks perfect in my opinion! I'm really surprised by all of this because I'm usually obsessed with precision and fit and finish, but there's something alright about spending this kind of money on the SMF or SNG and it not being more fine tuned. I don't think that would be OK with any other knife, make sense?

Now, I'd also like the B12 William Henry for certain occasions and I may grab a Sebenza.....just because. I don't feel the Sebenza will fill any certain niche like the Strider or William Henry. It's just adding to one that's already filled or at least bridging the gap between them. Remember, I'm speaking in everyday carry terms, not about my collection.

Like I said, I've never been so satisfied. And I loved my SMF cc, but it just never felt "right" to me. I left it at home at times due to it's size. Not that it was too big to carry, just felt too big when I pulled it out to use it.

Thanks for the thread. Nice pics too.

You're a lucky man.

Spent a good deal of the day looking for an SNG to no avail.....any leads?

My "official" wife-monitored budget says Spyderco PM or Manix 2 as the next knife but I'm still trying to swing for a SNG.

Yup... the SnG is one great knife. I have a hard time convincing myself that there's a better folder out there for me and my use. There are better "bargain" knives out there, like the Military, but the SnG is pretty much the round peg that fits the hole for me.

The only thing is the inconsistency of them from knife to knife. The one I'm EDCing now is my third, and the best one yet... My CC was GREAT, but the grind on this new one is a lot thinner, which I like. I would recommend that if someone buys one and does not like it to flip it and get another... The ball detent is also a lot stronger on this one. Closed centering is also perfect... I know you're not "supposed" to care about this with a Strider, but it matters to ME> It is a bummer that it is kinda a gamble, but, I finally won!

I might know where you can get a new one. Not sure if he has any CC models right now, but he should have the regular SNG... He had a green one recently. PM me if you want me to contact him for you. He's a dealer, I bought my SNG through him.

The tiger stripe pattern seems pretty resilient.
I have a fixed blade Strider with that pattern. I’ve chopped with it and the pattern is just lightly faded in the contact area. My Sng shows no wear at all.
Although I wouldn’t choose the tiger stripe pattern on another brand, its’ OK on a Strider because, well, it’s a Strider!

There are some knives that I like a lot at first, but the more I use them, the less I like them. I recently sold a Spyderco Phoenix for that reason.

Some knives likeability factor stays the same for me. I like them when I bought them, but I haven’t grown fonder of them since.

Some knives don’t impress me too much at first, then, the more I use them, the more I like them.

The Sng is one of those knives that I didn’t like all that well at first.
The more I’ve used it, the more I appreciate the design. It’s now one of my favorite knives.

I bought an Umnumzaan at the same time as the Sng.
I liked it when I first got it. I still like it, but I don’t like it any better than I did initially.

I agree with you about the CRK knives. They are kind of in the middle. Not quite dress knives, not quite hard use knives. They are bombproof; I’m not knocking their durability or construction.

The Striders however, are simply no nonsense tools that have no pretense of being anything else. They are very confidence inspiring in their execution, construction and design.

Exactly, this knife just grows on me more each day. Best purchase I've made and I've owned more expensive and prettier knives.

I agree with everything you said, bearcut!

Are you the one on YouTube? The third SNG, not a CC and closed centering sounds very familiar.. If you are, you helped make my decision on the SNG. Thank you!

Also, I'm in Austin now and then....I'm a wedding photographer.....and we're thinking of moving there from Corpus. How do you like living there?

Jonathan

WOW. Awesome EDC Set-up. Everything you have there is the same as My EDC. Except I traded My Kimber just recently for a Sig 226 Blackhawk and I Carry the CC SMF. Same Holster and everything!!!!!!!

I Carry the surefire in the day too. never know when you'll be in a building and the lights go out. Or if you'll be out till late. And you can use it as a basher too;-)
