My latest Spike hawk is the last of this style, Epoxy coated and convex edge. I will be blueing the heads on my subsequent hawks and adding a pewter inlay in the area for the screw. As you can see I'm trying to sculpt the metal and keep the lines flowing on the Spike. The Pipe hawk has been fun shaping the octagon. It came out on the money and all done by hand filing.

Those are some wicked spike hawks i love those, i would buy those up in a heartbeat if it was in my budget. Very unique spike on those i would love to use that to see they throw.

The newest Spikehawk is nearing completion. The head will have an inlay to eliminate the screw hole and will be blued. The convex edge will be polished bright. So far the metal is taken to 400 grit and buffed with a Scotch Bright pad to give a satin finish. The hickory haft which will be used has a boiled lindseed oil finish and is now drying. The bevel along the beard still needs to be finished. The Pollhawk will be completed when this project is done.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for looking and commenting. I'm going to use rust blue or Brownell's Oxpho-Blue. I have used both during my gunstock making days and neither one ever let me down. As for the inlay, I'm not sure whether I will undercut the metal with a handpiece or etch the design for the pewter. Right now the satin finish on the metal is completed and the haft is almost ready for another coat of oil.

The spike hawk was completed today. I filed the 8 pointed star in the screw hole, poured pewter into the star and finished flush to the panel. I oil finished the haft to a satin sheen. I used Brownell's Dicropan IM blue and rubbed it out a little extra so it would not look brand new. The metal has a patina look to it. I may wrap with rawhide but for now I'm leaving it as is.

Thank you fellow Hawkmen for looking and commenting on my Spikehawk mods. I am humbled by the interest shown my work by all of you this past year. Many of you modify the CS hawks as I do and others are the craftsmen who inspire all of us to ever greater heights in our work. All of you inspire me and have made hawks an amazing pastime for me. I have been thinking things over regarding offering modified hawks for sale this coming year. Coincidently my wife has been encouraging me to do the same. I will keep all interested hawkers informed as I move forward. I will have to change to a paying subscriber and hopefully not break any forum rules.
Right now I work and live in different states and the driving commute, although one round trip every 5 days, is a bitch. Right now, I carve spare time any way I can.
