New "spin" on an old method

Interesting idea, but I'd have liked to seen him produce a coal to prove it.. Thanks for sharing.....

that is different ... would be a great technique to use if you suffer from a bad back.

Interesting, but no thanks. I could have a fire going using the old tried and true method before he gets his feet aligned properly. I understand the concept, but I don't think it will work all that well in practice.

I saw this as well... Interesting... I might give it a try...but it also got me thinking about an other possible variation... (soon to be announced.)

He just uploaded a more detailed video on this ... check it out:

You wanna know what I think? I can't see it ever working, efficiently. You don't see people doing this ANYWHERE for a reason. Ten seconds to a coal, my ass. I'm not usually one to get worked up over something but this kind of asshatery pisses me off. If you are going to reveal a "better way" you had better damn well show results.

I guarantee he has NEVER gotten a coal from ANY type of friction fire. Did you see his fireboard w/ notch?

Garbage.

Sorry for the mini-meltdown. I don't know if my BS tolerance has been reached... but I want to beat this guy with his own shoes!

Ahhhh..... better.
Rick

Somebody please be successful at this "easier" method and prove me wrong.

Just think about where the dust/coal would be falling to. There is no notch setup for using the board in that position. I'm with Rick: it's not going to work.

Okay seeing the second tape explains why his notch looks like that. (though I don't agree).... where's the coal.... minimal smoke.... I'm still not convinced.

Though I probably wouldn't beat him anymore.... I'm a changed man, now.

Instead of nay-saying, I just posted a comment asking him to build a fire with this method. We'll see.

I can see the concept, and I can see where that would work(possibly!!) for someone with bad knees.. I'm hoping someone, or he will get a coal with it.. Until then will wait and see... Not knocking him, the idea has merit for sure...

I can't see how it would; and I've watched his video three times, as well as went back and checked out the parts--ESPECIALLY THE NOTCHES.

The dust looks like it's just falling out of the hearthboard with no controlled point to pile up in to form a coal. Which is very important.

His spindle seems to be acting like a boat propeller: shooting the dust out, back and then down. Whereas with the upright method, gravity pulls the dust down and into the notch, where it collects to build and form the base for the coal.

I'd wager the smoke he's getting is from the spindle and/or hearthboard and not from a coal forming. If you've made a coal with the regular method, you'll notice that you get smoke from the spindle and hearth, but you also get another distinct line of smoke from a coal. So you have two columns of smoke, one of which (that from the spindle/hearth) is weaker and disappears sooner.

I could be wrong though.

And I plan on trying it just to see if my theory is correct.

I apologize for being overly harsh... it was out of character for me... but I won't change the post just to hide the fact that I was a dick... I admit it.

I just find it irresponsible to make a claim of an easier way and have nothing to show for it but smoke and dust. I could probably hold the set in my armpit and get smoke and dust. Is getting a coal plausible? Yes. Probable? Not likely. Efficient? Hell no.

I'm not afraid to eat my words and have done it in the past.

We'll see.

Hey dick,.....er, I mean Rick.

JK bro. :D Looking forward to the arm pit coal!

KuRUpTD that is different ... would be a great technique to use if you suffer from a bad back.

Hey KuRUpTD,

I have a bad back and that would kill it. All the strain is forward and down. Might depend on what kind of back problem you have, though.

I disagree with some, I think a coal is possible, although some modifications would be necessary, like a way to 'corral' all the char.

While it's not something I'll be trying soon, I give the guy credit for examining other possibilities. Without this, we might still be living in caves. (Yeah, I know, some of you would like that. :D)

Doc

If I were trying this method.... which I may have to now that I talked out of my ass... I would a through notch on the top facing edge of the fire board(where all the friction is happenning) It may start to wander up but I think you may have a greater chance of getting a coal efficiently. I would also use both sides for the fireboard, since the bearing block is not needed here.

Doc.... I restated that a coal is possible..... but definately not efficient...... now you gone and made me feel bad.... snif snif.

Dick
