New Spyderco Kitchen knives

At the moment the Spyderco kitchen knives are "ecologically packaged" - that is no packaging at all other than a cardboard safety sleeve. A see-through box like you see around a Gerber Balance Plus would add to the cost, but it would be a more attractive retail package.

I think there was a block set available some years ago, from Cutlery Shoppe at least, with the Santoku, two utilities, and the paring knife.

I haven't found a really good deal in a knife block yet. A.G. Russell sells a very good hollow plastic knife block that will hold just about any kitchen knife, including wide blades like the Santoku. It's not listed as an "exclusive" over there, but I haven't found a wholesale source for them. Maybe the folks at Spyderco might know where to get them.

We don't have a block a this time. We have tried several over the years. Now we're just beginning to think about blocks again. Any suggestions or "imperatives" would be appreciated. Should they fit in a drawer, stick to a wall ( magnet), sit on the counter, hang from the cabinets, etc.??

I use a magnetic strip at home. I also use a "Galley "V" to maintain them. A few strokes each useage before putting back on the magnet. Always scary sharp, never stop to sharpen.

Jbroome - use our little paring knife for the detail work and you'll probably stop using the Delica.

For a knife block, I like this one:

My only complaint about it is that my distributors don't carry it!

I have noticed a few things since I have been dating, and married for a few months, one of the things that I have learned is that women don't necissarily think rationally about things.

Example number 1. Women like cut flowers in a vase, why? Because they are pretty. Not all that rational if you think about it. A live plant would produce more flowers over a longer time.

Example number 2. Women like pretty cars. Recently my sister bought a little honda, why, because it was cute. The thing is gutless and uncomfortable. But it was cute and that is why she bought it.

DOn't get me wrong my wifes unrationality and ability to look at beauty is many times what makes her so attractive to me.

Now you are wondering what this has to do with the topic. I feel that the beauty of the packaging and looks of the knife has to equal the functionality in order for the female population to buy the knife. For men, make it as ugly as you want, if it has great functionality then we are going to use it. However for women (in general) unless it also looks nice they won't be caught dead with it.

What I am trying to say is that unless the packaging and looks of the knife equal the functionality I think spyderco will have a hard time in the cutlery market due to the female clientel.

I would have to say that the knives should come with a "set" possibility with a block or some sort of storage to make it beautiful, and functional. With some sort of advertizing centering around "the last kitchen knives you will ever need to buy"

Humm... how did this post get so long???

I don't think a Spyderco kitchen knife can really be appreciated without picking it up (a handicap for all us Internet dealers). In a store it should not be in one of those sealed transparant plastic-topped packages like Gerber uses for its Balance Plus series. It would be nice, however, to have something a little more secure than that slip-on cardboard blade protector for shipping or for carrying one home from the store, and it might be worth a buck or two to have a package that can be gift-wrapped.

Or Spyderco can just advertise an ecologically sound packaging policy - recycle some other cardboard box!

I don't know if it would sell well, but I'd like a combo-edge "sandwich" knife for the picnic basket.

A combo edge "sandwich" knife is also good for cutting coffee cake and such at a party or reception, since it works like a bread knife, but the wide blade with the dropped edge allows you to use more of the edge right down to the cutting board.

Here's a small picture of the Forschner version, in Mitteleuropa Mystery Steel:

Hmm, this could get expensive fast.

The sandwich knife should be full-tang, VG-10, with a thin 6in. blade. 70/30 ComboEdge. Handle material should be polished brown G-10.
