Sal has mentioned in another thread that Mules will be coming out in CPM-M4, CPM S90V, 9CR18 Mo and ZDP-189. Im a hunter and the most important thing in a knife to me is edge retention. Im not interested in toughness, stain resistance or any other factor. Which of the above steels has the best edge retention? Is there a steel that the Mule might come out in thats better than these? Thanks for the help.

Hard to say for certain. I've used ZDP-189 and S90V, and S90V is my pick for top edge-holder so far. CATRA testing puts them closer than my real-world abuse. I work on a lot of abrasive materials, and my S90V Military outperforms my ZDP-189 knives easily.

CPM M4 is a high-speed tool steel that is supposed to be even better than S90V, but I haven't used it yet, so I can't say how it will work for me. I've never even heard of 9CR18Mo, so I have no idea what it is going to be like.

ZDP 189 is probably the one you would want but any of them would be a good knife.
S90V is an excellent steel as well.

Actually, any steel would make me happy.
My Mule is one of my all-time favorite knives, especially now that I can carry it, thanks to UnSub. He sent me a really nice sheath for it.
The knife's design is just about perfect, to me.

ZDP-189 would be cool, as I have wanted to try that steel out.

That was an OST sheath Roo and I love it. It is especially good with the Mule for neck carry because the Mule is so skinny it will hide under even a thin T-Shirt.
I can`t say enough good things about On Scene tacticals sheaths either
Here are some goodies.

Im just wondering when the next mule is going to come out.
I didnt want to get the last one because i live in hawaii and that steel was supposed to be not very rust resistant.

eyeeatingfish, the next mule is supposed to come out before the end of Sept. It can be any of the steels mentioned above. Im pretty sure that the CPM M4 is not a stainless steel and will rust. I believe the others are stainless.

Probably the 9Cr18 MO will be the most rust resistant with the S90V a close second.

Sept is great news.
