Mine has the full serrated edge. The blad says v8-10. Can anyone tell me if this is as good as the steel they were using around 1990 in the early Police models which was really an excellent cutter. Thanks.

I'm sure you mean VG-10?

VG-10 is premium stainless that is well-rounded and a solid performer. I consider it pretty much ideal for EDC style knives.

It takes a finer edge and holds it longer than the GIN-1/G-2 that Sal started with. Have no fear, it is at least as good as the oldies ;)

As already stated, VG-10 is a great steel, IMO one of the best for a folding knife. Congrats on the new Police knife.

It definitely says VG-10, perhaps it looks like an 8 to you. This is the standard steel for the seki city made Spydercos. Its a very good steel.

Please hear me everyone. The blade on my brand new Spyderco Police reads as follows: V8-10. This is exactly what it says, exactly. On other side it says Seki-City, Japan.
Is this steel same as V-10, not sure. I think it is a new variant like someplace between v8 and v10??
Maybe spyderco can answer this or perhaps they do not wish to address this new steel for some reason??

I have seen a few pictures of Spyderco knives where the "G" in VG-10 didn't get stamped or cut very well and "kinda" looks like an "8."

You do not have a special, one-of-a-kind Police model with a new blade steel that Spyderco won't talk about. You have a regular model with a slightly botched blade steel marking. That is all. Spyderco has never made a knife with V8-10 steel, because such a beast does not exist.

Anyways, you've got a great knife.

I would bet that if you looked at the markings with a magnifying glass, you would see that it is VG-10. Like others have said, sometimes the stampings on the steel are not perfect. Don't worry about it, just use the heck out of it and enjoy your new knife!

It is really a G on careful inspection. The stamping was tough to read. So I feel much better now and wish to thank everyone for the help.

If it is any consolation, I've lost count of the number of times I have seen VG-10 listed as V8-10 on eBay auctions. It might be a problem if Spyderco starts making blades out of old engine blocks ;)
