New Spydie Knife Idea, Tell Me What You Think

A lot of good information here. I really appreciate the input.

Some thoughts to refine;

It sounds like a slip-joint (notch-joint) with a finger choil would be preferred over a locking knife?

Blade length should be between 2" - 2.5"?

It should have a point, but more like a drop point or sheep foot, but no so pointy as a leaf?

Colored handle?

One blade, or more than one blade?

any other accessories?

Should the overall model be smaller to accomodate the smaller hand of a child?

Thanx again.

Those would be pretty cool; no, they aren't engraved with any Philmont or Boy Scouts of America symbols---they're the plain jane factory models with black FRN handles. I checked with the man behind the counter when I was out there---I was a little disappointed. It would have been a cool Spyderco souvenior to take home after an awesome trip.

Sal-
I just got into the forums and I think it's awesome the head of a company that's as great as Spyderco takes the time to interact with the users of his knives. I just wanted to say thanks. :D
A slip-joint seems to be what most people would prefer for their first knife; I personally think it's a little dangerous (my first knife, a Case, closed on me a couple times). A lockback would be what I would want my kids (if I had any) to have---IMHO their fingers would be safer. I'd make it a two-inch blade, and I've always like drop points for utilitarian purposes. Just one blade, too. I think bright-colored handles, maybe orange, bright pink for the girls---colors along those lines---would be eye-appealing and also help if your child dropped his knife in the woods---easier to find. Flat-ground blade of VG10..pretty resilient against rust and easy to resharpen in my experience. Accessories? A guide book that's easy to read that may teach kids safety? Of course a pocket clip, lanyard hole: the standard stuff. If finger grooves and other things were kept out and it was a generic ergo, it could be small enough for little hands or a small-knife with three fingers on the handle. Or maybe make it in two sizes like the Manix? These are just my personal opinions, but I would have loved a knife like this instead of my $1.88 Wal-Mart special when I was a Cub Scout---and I didn't get my Delica until I was a Tenderfoot. I think thousands of Scouts would appreciate this---and every dad looking for the right knife for his kids. :)

Sal In my humble opinion the delica in its current version with a plain edge is the perfect first knife. My first knife was a delica.

Sal- I always would like to thank you for your interest. Just one of the many reasons I carry Spyderco.

It sounds like a slip-joint (notch-joint) with a finger choil would be preferred over a locking knife? I would prefer lockblade

Blade length should be between 2" - 2.5"? Good for me
It should have a point, but more like a drop point or sheep foot, but no so pointy as a leaf? I would prefer drop point over all others

Colored handle? Got me there.. pink for girls but guys could be tricky maybe a brighter blue like blue natives.

One blade, or more than one blade? One blade

any other accessories? Sharpening Book/ Safe Use would be nice, perhaps a double sided "stone" with gray and white ceramic?

Should the overall model be smaller to accomodate the smaller hand of a child? I don't think the handle should be smaller than a Delica or Native size.

One other thing...I don't have any trouble putting an edge on VG-10, but when someone at work really tears theirs up it is a challenge to get the burr back. Lesser steels are much easier for the novice to sharpen IMO.

Thanks again.

It sounds like a slip-joint (notch-joint) with a finger choil would be preferred over a locking knife? Use a lock because knives with out locks are dangerous when one prys something with a blade and the kids will definatly pry things with the blade so I think it would be safer with a lock

Blade length should be between 2" - 2.5"? yes

It should have a point, but more like a drop point or sheep foot, but no so pointy as a leaf? Sheepsfoot blade would be ideal

Colored handle? Blue Red Green Orange Pink FRN

One blade, or more than one blade? One SE one PE ?

any other accessories? Removable Clipit and Pouch for Belt Maybe a Bit Driver that holds a reversable philips slotted screwdriver bit

Should the overall model be smaller to accomodate the smaller hand of a child? Yes

but thats just my opinion
