New Steel – Crucible S45VN

@Willie71 I been very happy with elmax over the years, but it’s just hard to get and a pain to clean up. I ordered some s45vn if it hold to elmax it will be my go to steel for my hunting knives. IT was a pleasure ordering from @nsm and to get what I wanted.
Clean up meaning remove scale? Or final polishing?

Larrin Larrin When I said clean up I mean scale . The last sheet of elmax I bought still had the Can on it and when I clean it up on the surface grinder it sticks to the belts like crap. Then belts stop cutting now this is just my experience on what I have.
After that it’s all good. I do see AKS sell it now all ready SG .
I just SG 75 Z wear blades and is was a breeze compared to elmax.

Stuff can run hard. I like that.

The s35 runs much softer.

What was your HT protocol and temper? I have some that I will be doing after the holidays that I want to run at Rc63-64.
I just ran some Austenitizing coupons to find the peak hardness and the drop in hardness to RA going up with temperture.

I'd say Larrin has a Solid HT layed out for folks

Especially if you want 63-64rc

Wow, I was comparing it to AEB-L, what a difference in price. Talking from $6-7 per blade to something like $50 per blade.
For a piece of stock for a blade say 0.118" to 0.125" x 2" x 11.5" or so.

I'm sure it's worth it, just an observation. Look forward trying it.
