In this article I discuss the new Damasteel product Damacore DC18N along with its core steel N11X. This has been my first chance to do an "early analysis" on a new product. Hopefully these companies start coming out with more stuff so I can provide my quick take. I talked about what N11X is, and what its expected performance is relative to the typical Damasteel DS93X made up of RWL34 and PMC27.

Very nice article, but those products raise a lot of questions about what Damasteel really trying to do. Yes, they are all premium products but what is the real benefit using such combos?

Looks like it will make awesome kitchen knife. one reason to have a combo like this is to have the core steel look and still get a mono steel like performance. many of the san mai blades have soft cladding that does not harden.

I too find the choice of a nitrogen steel puzzling/interesting. Maybe it just adds to the “exotic” nature of the product. I like nitrogen steels myself, but I rarely (never, really) get people asking for them. I plan to use more, but that’s just to go into a niche that few people are in. I like doing things differently than others. I like the toughness, and fine edge stability, but I’d be hard pressed to say nitrogen steels are better than aeb-l. It’s just different.

This should be a great alternative over Chad Nichols's core damascus. Really sick of that stuff because it came off-centered 80% of the time which pretty horrible for such a expensive billet.
