I have just received 20ea 3' sticks of 1086 V HRA from Crucible.

I have NOT received any data on the heat treat or performance from Crucible yet. I have asked and they are looking for it. When I get that information, I will post it. I expect this information to be slow in coming as they work through their Chapter 11 issues.

In the mean time, my reason for posting this is to announce the fact that Crucible has made a batch of this stuff just for knife makers. I was told I was the first to order it. I don't know but I hadn't even heard of this stuff until Aldo told me about it a few weeks ago. I called them up and pre-ordered some.

I was told it has a dash of Vanadium in it. (The "V" in the name gives that away also.) Presumably to give it a little finer grain. I don't have any idea what the HRA designation means.

I am also asking if anyone knows anything about this stuff.

I do have it listed on my supply site but I'm not going to post a link for it here. I don't want to try and sell stuff in this forum.

it sounds interesting! cant wait for the rest of the info.... and then i can wait for some one to explain it to me!

thanks

Tracy,

I know all about it. Give me a call. I'll tell you all about it.

Aldo

PS- It's hot rolled and annealed!!!

HRA does mean hot rolled annealed. I also think it's great that you sell steel on your site! It's tough finding trusted sellers, and you're one of the best! I just need supplies to buy from you :p

I'd say there won't be enough to make a difference. I'm not to sure of the process but I was told this is a very clean batch of steel. The heat treat is pretty straight forward and there are a ton of really good carbides. It was tested against W-2 and 52100 in a rope cutting test run by Doc Batson and it beat the pants off both of them. I'm siked!

Aldo, I would have to see this to believe it and I would question the heat
treat on the W2. In other words, I don't believe it :D

I thought they were goin to change the name, because it's not even close to
1086? And there's already a 1086M out there with V added?

I just wrote out a long reply and lost it when I bumped the wrong button! Lets just say come see me at the show for the complete details. You will love this steel. It is everything we have wanted for a long time. Crucible listened to the forged makers and responded with a completely new steel. 'CruForgeV' it is better steel that will make better forged blades. There will be spec sheets and a brochure to explain everything. I also have lots of test results from the met lab at the mill in syracuse to share also. This isn't supposed to be a mystery, it was planned to be rolled out with some fanfare at the Blade show. Crucibles circumstances means they have reduced their promotion at the show. I will have info, and I think Scott Devanna will be there with all info also. 1% carbon, .5% chrome, .75 manganese, .75% vanadium. Yes we have pictures of the grain and the carbide distribution for you.

I just want to know what's going to happen as far as the bankruptcy before I go to trying new steels that may not be available in the future? Am I worrying over nothing?

I think so. Companies can bounce back much easier than a person. They just need to do some downsizing, maybe source other markets(like a new knife steel:)). Plus it's just steel, you don't need any work done on it and if you don't like it sell it. I'm sure somebody will buy it.

They have at least 80,000 lbs ready to ship. I think the Chapter 11 is planned to help them make it until the auto industry comes back. That is a huge factor for them. I am of course not speaking for them, but have recently been to the mill and in contact with sales, marketing, and research. I would actually encourage us to support them as an american made steel and the one company that took an interest in us and made an investment for us steel pounders. They have been working on this project for over 3 years, so the reorganization is so recent that it has not affected the project until now.

WHOA! I want to try some of this stuff! 1% Carbon for a keen edge, .5% Chrome for through hardening and toughness. .75% Manganese for grain refinement, and .75% Vanadium to supercharge the sharpness. Id say quench in a slower oil? Parks AAA or Tough Quench?

Tracy, I just ordered a few bars from you to try out once we get the heat treating info. Sounds like a good product.

SWEET!!!!! Russ Andrews gave me a heads up a couple of days ago, but I didn't know that any of our supplier brethren had ordered any yet. Big ups to Dan, Dr, Batson and the other smiths who were involved in this process and of course to the guys at Crucible:thumbup:

I need to order me some of this. But does it come in 1 inch rounds?
