new steel for forging from Crucible 1086 V HRA

The name is poor as it's carbon content is 1% not .86 %.That V amount is more than just for grain refinement. From that composition it should forge well and perform well !!

That's because that isn't it's name, Mete... the official rollout at Blade will be referring to it as CruForgeV.

Can't wait to get my mitts on this stuff - I've worked on it at Dan's shop, and the differences are apparent.:D

Aldo, this thread isn't about W2 but if I were to call the Doc, I'd ask who's W2 and how was it heat treated. W2 beats 52100 in my shop. Now enough of that :p

CruForgeV looks like a very good carbon steel, looks like HT will be very similar to 01.
I will give it a try at some point.

They have at least 80,000 lbs ready to ship. I think the Chapter 11 is planned to help them make it until the auto industry comes back. That is a huge factor for them. I am of course not speaking for them, but have recently been to the mill and in contact with sales, marketing, and research. I would actually encourage us to support them as an american made steel and the one company that took an interest in us and made an investment for us steel pounders. They have been working on this project for over 3 years, so the reorganization is so recent that it has not affected the project until now.

Dan

Where I work we build thermoforming equipment and the tooling to go with it. We use a good amount of Crucible's steel for our punches and dies. Our distributor in Detroit assured they were not going anywhere anytime soon.

well let's recap a bit.

apparently Dan Farr deserves some credit for getting Crucibles attention and working with them to get a forging steel for the bangers using Crucible technology. Kudo's to you Dan and anyone else that worked on testing and feedback to Crucible.

I just happened to get an order in a shipped for this when I was working on another order. I'm sure the other dealers will be all over this in no time. Crucible,to my knowledge, does not have exclusive distributorships on steels.

It has been in the works for 3 years now. I heard something a couple years ago but there have always been a few steels 'in the works' with Crucible.

Like every new steel, it's going to have lovers, haters and doubters. The dust usually settles fairly quickly if people do their own tests. It takes longer if people rely on what other people say. (I've never figured that part out)

It's technically not 1086 if it's nearly 1% carbon or it would be 1099. CruForgeV seems to be the name at this point.

it seems to be made from 1% carbon, .5% chrome, .75 manganese, .75% vanadium.

It hasn't been said but the assumption is it was smelted using the Crucible particle and double vacuum smelting technology we love in the CPM line.

It is available in .25"x1.25", .25"x1", 1.125"x1"round. Nice sizes for forging.

It is hot rolled annealed and has very surface scale.

it comes in 10' lengths but can be cut to customer specs

Crucible is in Chapter 11 and that clouds everything up a bit. I have been told that most of personnel cuts have been made. Hopefully so. Let's hope Bruce lands on his feet. In every chapter 11 I've seen, the first thing done is the bean counters cut expenses first and then trim business models back to 'core business'. I wouldn't at all think they are done changing their business model yet but that just gets into speculation and that doesn't help anyone. I do know that now is the time to buy Crucible steel, if ever, to help keep an American steel company in business that has taken a big interest in us knife makers.

If you were playing the number game the 61xx series is a Cr, V steel. Some of you have made things of 6150 I'm sure.So maybe 61100 .But I'll take CruForgeV, but certainly not 1086V.

Actual analysis for this melt...According to Scott D:
C..........1.02
V............70
Mn..........72
Si............38
Cr...........56

So they will some samples or some for sale at The BladeShow ??

I just ordered 6 bars from Mr. Mickley because, well, I had to have some RIGHT FREAKIN' NOW!! :D Now it is time for all of you mad scientists to get on the stick and figure out which of the nickel bearing steels welds up the best with this stuff for damascus.

Hey Joe,

Thanks a LOT you coque suker!!! :p Tracey is now out of the 1.25" bar. I guess I'll just have to come by the shop now for certain. :D

Troop, yes it is.

Mike, I'll have some soon enough. I'm going to try and get some before the show. They shipped from NY right past NJ to Texas and now they got to get it from Texas to NJ so I can take it to Georgia! Hope it gets here in time>

Aldo

I asked them some questions about getting this material to Canada and prices and what-not.

Here is the reply I got from Rhonda.

"HI Steve,

We sell quite a bit to small guys. We have a $75.00 min. order. The only problem I see is that we do not use the postal system. We can ship your orders UPS.

This is a new program and the first batch we only ordered ¼” material. Depending on how the program goes, we may consider different sizes for the next Mill order."

The 1/4" x 1-1/4" 1086V material is 4.99 a pound. I don't remember the other prices off hand I have the PDF she sent me at home.

The 6 bars I ordered just arrived today. Im not going to even attempt to play with the stuff until after Blade, but I will say this. Unlike some other companies that I have bought from (not you, Aldo.....you aren't a company per se...lol), when Crucible tells you that the bar stock is 1/4 inch thick and 1 or 1 1/4 inches wide, they really mean it!! No thin, narrow round edged spring stock here!:D The finish on the bars is also very smooth considering it is HRA. Shows you what you can get using good equipment.

Where can we order some of this in small quantites of $100.00 or less. Anybody got a Phone # to order from crucible if they take small orders?
Thanks
