is confirmed. Recieved an e-mail from CRK (Bridget). She wrote
that the CRK Mnandi will be available "within the next few weeks"
with S30V steel. She also wrote that the Large Sebenza "should be
available for sale in February or March" with S30V. No mention
of Small Sebbie or Umfamm was given. Stinky.

I think it is great that CRK continues to strive to improve their products. One point I need to mention, is that before this change, everyone that I have ever spoken to talked about bg42 as beening the greatest steel since sliced bread. I believe it is a great steel.

Even though the steel is changing, let us not loose site of how got bg42 is. This does not mean that bg42 is an INFERIOR STEEL.

I have owned, used hard; sharpened knives with blades made from most of the varieties of stainless steels on the market. I have found to-date that I like BG-42 (over vg10, s10v, ats34, 154cm, 440a, 440c, aus8, aus6, aus10,acuto440 etc. etc.).

My point is, let's not discount the quality of the existing steel because a new version of the sebenzas are coming out.

I found that when a new steel becomes available, the original variety has a tendency to fall "OUT OF FAVOR".

BG42 will never fall out of favor in my eyes IMHO.

Nope, no problems here with BG42 either! I've got knives with D2, A2, 440, 440V, ATS34 and 154CM, 420V, a variety of carbons, and even some R2D2 I'm pretty sure...

Though I can achieve the same-to-better level of sharpness with some carbon steels, like 01 for instance, nothing retains it's edge like my small Seb's BG42. And being stainless is just a bonus in my book!

Professor.

Of course...if anyone is thinking that they must trade in their current Seb so they can have one with the new steel (such an owner may feel that are behind the times...or perhaps their current BG-42 seb just "doesn't cut it" anymore ;))...please feel free to email me and I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands :D

Interesting news :)
If I am not mistaken CRK does offer blade replacement? In this case would be an upgrade but anyway. Can someone confirm that?

Thought the same thing myself....

How will this effect the resale value of the Sebenza? Does this mean that people will not buy preowned BG-42 because they would prefer the S30V?

I can see Johnny Carson holding an envelope to his forehead...and he sees many GOOD sales in the future for those old BG-42 bladed Sebenzas...:D

When CRK came out with BG-42 they had several requests for blade change outs from the ATS-34 but I believe they didn't do many if any of those blade changes, so I'm not sure if that will be an option...Times change and maybe they will accept orders for replacements?

For me? I have both ATS-34 and BG-42 and like both pretty well as each cut nicely! I will probably select something in the new blade steel...just because!

Gator97,

You may want to check with CRK on that blade replacement. Remember the lock scale and the blade are matched as a pair. So, you may have to change the back of the knife and the blade, not just the blade.

Yeah, I am aware of that, either way I'll have to send my benza in.
Was just wondering if that was an option :) I'll email CRK.

They just keep making better and better knives, don't they? And people wonder why they are so popular

Agree :) S30V seems to be a good one.

P.S. Now if only One piece line comes out in CPM3V :D

Anyone hear if CRK is ever going to give in to requests for a Stellite or Talonite bladed Sebenza? Sebenza fans have been asking for one long before S30V ever came about? Any current info?

Michael

Yes I get one next year with the new blade steel. To me, it does not diminish the BG-42 versions, in fact, they will become collectors items over time.

I believe Camillus has a monopoly on Talonite in production blades. I don't know if it's licensing or just what it is.

Paul

Talonite is a name brand of a cobaly alloy. There are other alternatives like Stellite that could be used and have the same properties. A stellite bladed Sebenza would be a thing of beauty. :D

I thought a Sebenza Talonite/Stellite knife could not be done because the blade is held magnetially in place during the CNC cutting and those alloys are non-magnetic.

Which is excactly why I have a TNT on order for Tom Mayo. Still will cherish my small clasic Seb though.

I remember there was a longish thread couple years ago. When talonite was relatively new stuff. Chris said it's not suitable for their equipment, as it's non magnetic, and even if it was, overall costs would be probably higher.
