Then do yourself a big favor and GET familiar!I'd love to buy something used but dependable but I'm not familiar with most of the more obscure makes & models.
Some of the brands I listed (like Music Hall and Portal) and FAR better than even the NAD/Rotel/Adcom/Arcam offerings, feature great customer support, and are devilishly good deals.
I agree with jdm61, and would get a Portal Panache and the Creek tuner, or better yet, keep your eye out for an older Onkyo Integra T-9090 II tuner.
The Panache is built like a TANK. On top of that, it sports a world class headphone output section... which is perfect for those nights when you can't crank up the volume. Get yourself a pair of Sennheiser HD-600's after a while and enjoy.
The only downside is no remote... but that's the price you pay for performance. Per Panache's website: "There are remote control systems that don't compromise the sound quality of a unit, but including one here would have raised the price to a point that made us uncomfortable."
