Just received my new Tatanka in the mail this evening. Man is this thing BIG............ Now I need one of those nice looking lanyards with the spyder beads........

Would love to seem a shot of the tatanka next to some of its smaller Spyderco brethren, just to admire how much of a beast it is

There just doesn't seem to be the response to the Tatanka here on the forums as I had hoped for. Where's the lively yackety-yak?
Do you think that the size would be the major factor? Possibly because of the VG-10 steel instead of the "new kids on the block" super steels.

For me the size entices me because it's more of a novelty, but the steel doesn't excite me.
Just a wild guess, but I'm going to say there won't be an iteration of this knife. Dinosaurs are interesting but they would compete with the food supply of the living.

Overall I like the knife...give me a compelling reason to buy it. I don't care about the "Fort Knox/Brinks Armored Car" locking mechanism. I would never use it that hard to phase even lesser locks...not a factor for me.

Well I havnt seen too many on the exchange.

Tatanka is a great knife but it isn't an EDC. That alone cuts down on the buzz. Put it next to a Military, a basically similar knife but the size difference is overwhelming.

Heh, I've been carrying it everywhere since I got it. :)
If it fits in my pocket, it's a pocketknife.

This thread needs pics:

I haven't checked the exchange for one so I can't speak to that. If I bought one, I'd probably have no intention to sell it. Certainly could make no profit if that's what one was erroneously thinking, not near term for sure. So since it's a new knife; not a lot of talk about it, I wouldn't expect anyone to unload it on the exchange unless they had a bad case of buyers remorse and okay with a loss, so it makes sense to keep it.

That would be one honkin edc...yeah! It would be fun carrying it on occasion, in fact a blast. My friends that I see about once a week or so always want to see what knife I have. They themselves don't care about the hobby but the differences in knives (size, beauty, function) intrigue them, so I always try to have some knife that they haven't seen before, and because we're of the same age, they don't remember which knives I've shown them before:D. I carry a PM2 about 25% of the time, but wouldn't have a problem carrying the Big Guy if I could tighten up my belt enough to keep my pants up so as not to trip over them.

And if anyone is on the fence about it, buy one!
You'll like it. :)

Stabman, any down side to this knife in your opinion? Would you have liked it in a different steel? What thing or things do you like best about it?

I happen to like VG-10 steel, so that's not a problem for me.
Perhaps an option for 3V in such a knife, but then the price would be even higher.

I find it feels a lot like the Police in the hand, although obviously larger.
The way the handle is designed keeps the hand from sliding onto the blade when poking the tip into material, which was the main thing I didn't like about the stainless steel handle Police.

The choil is positioned well for either a hammer grip, or a "choked up saber grip" type of thing, so however you like using choils, it should work well.

The handle allows for all grips as well; forward grip edge up, forward grip edge out, reverse grip edge out, and reverse grip edge in. Unlike some handle designs, it doesn't force your hand into pre-set gripping options. Hence, no matter what you're cutting from whtever angle, you can hold the knife in such a way as to accomplish it.

I also like the way that it actually fits into the pockets of most of my pants; many larger knives don't sit quite as nicely. It's still a big knife in the pocket, but I can still carry my wallet in the same pocket without it being uncomfortable.

thanks for sharing those photos, stabman. that thing really is a tatanka. how easy is one handed operation, especially releasing the backlock?

Releasing the backlock is easy. Spyderco warns about letting that heavy blade swing shut, but done carefully, it is not dangerous.

Opening it is easy.
Closing it one-handed is easy enough if your finger is at the front of the handle, to catch the choil when you "flick" the blade downward.
Or just depress the lock, and close it by pressing the spine against your pants leg.

However, the paperwork with it recommends two handed closing.
