New tatanka

There just doesn't seem to be the response to the Tatanka here on the forums as I had hoped for. Where's the lively yackety-yak?
Do you think that the size would be the major factor? Possibly because of the VG-10 steel instead of the "new kids on the block" super steels.

For me the size entices me because it's more of a novelty, but the steel doesn't excite me.
Just a wild guess, but I'm going to say there won't be an iteration of this knife. Dinosaurs are interesting but they would compete with the food supply of the living.

Overall I like the knife...give me a compelling reason to buy it. I don't care about the "Fort Knox/Brinks Armored Car" locking mechanism. I would never use it that hard to phase even lesser locks...not a factor for me.

I'm starting to see more threads on the Tatanka, including the one I started. I think the knife has only been available since last October and it is a limited market. It might gain more momentum once everyone gets their credit cards paid down from Christmas. The blade steel is a compromise between affordability and performance. You really have to see in person the slab of VG-10 the Tatanka has to appreciate it. A better steel would only raise the cost and turn away even more potential buyers.

I held off for a long time on the oversized folders because of cost and most of them within my budget were Cold Steel with Aus-8 blades, which to me leaves a lot to be desired. I think Spyderco did an amazing job with the Tatanka. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a large blade folder. Just be careful and watch that blade drop when you depress the lockback, it will lop off a few fingers. ;)

I happen to like VG-10 steel, so that's not a problem for me.
Perhaps an option for 3V in such a knife, but then the price would be even higher.
I find it feels a lot like the Police in the hand, although obviously larger.
The way the handle is designed keeps the hand from sliding onto the blade when poking the tip into material, which was the main thing I didn't like about the stainless steel handle Police.

Thank you for your take on this knife Stabman. I have a fixed blade with 3V which is developing a little patina to it and I hear it's a great steel with only a little hands on knowledge from me. Understandably we sure would expect additional expense for a more expensive steel. I can understand Spyderco opting to see how well received it would become before themselves going to the extra expense of a m390, etc. steel. Maybe VG-10 ends up being the idea steel for a knife of this size. Sharpening would definably be an advantage.
I do like the look of the Police but have never held one. The Endura is as close as I can come.

Soooo many choices.

Said very well. I couldn't agree with you more. Looks like you've hit all the highlights.

A sprint run in the future with a different steel could be interesting.
Hopefully enough people get on board with it to make such things happen.

It's still a relatively new knife though...time will tell.

My Tatanka was definitely an EDC... until I got my One Year DDR AA-AXD.

Bumping it up to remind people about the Tatanka. :)

(Big knife requires big font :D)
