New Technology for Wilderness

Looks like a mass-market epirb. Could be a VERY useful backup. I wonder what they'll be charging to register/monitor it ?

Any idea what this new gadget is going to cost?

I'd love something like this, but the packable ones seem to be out of my price range.

$ 150 which seems reasonable though there may be service charges.

SAR teams everywhere will be getting the following text message:

My GPS coordinate is UTM XXXXXX, XXXXXX - where am I ???

Not that I would behave any differently, but that would give me the freedom to go farther out on my own. I think thats pretty cool.

Please don't take this wrong gunknifenut, but I would never take a greater risk with my life simply because of owning one of those things. Thinking like that has gotten lots of people killed! I have seen it time and time again in the SCUBA industry, and I have helped pull more than one dead diver out of shipwrecks/caves that thought they could do something simply because they owned special equipment.

I saw a tremendous story regarding an elk hunter getting turned around after a snow shower covered his trail and change the look of the landscape. The cloud cover was too thick for his GPS to pick up a signal. He had gone light leaving most of his gear in his truck as he wasn't going in very far. He made it though many thought he was a goner. He kept his wits and was able to improvise. Latter his wife bought he a compass navigation class. Now he carries a compass and knowledge of how to use it as well as the GPS. To me technology is often a convenience but it is not always a good substitute.

The vast majority of us that have spent time in the outback have gotten lost and lived to tell about it. It could have worked out differently in some cases.
Of more concern to me is injury. The places I normally hunt are pretty rough. The three shot warning signal is dependent on the wind (and you didn't drop your rifle in the fall). This could save your (or someone else's) life.

I dont like to let my life depend on things that are battery powered. Traditional navigation skills are much more useful for the money.

Actually, I might like this better than a cellphone even in town. There's lots of places where I can't get cell coverage, and letting my wife know I'm going to be late getting home for dinner is a survival skill all it's own. :D

I never said I would take additional chances with my life...Personally, going into the woods is safer than getting in your car IMO. I have never been worried for myself in the wild, I wasn't sure where I was once, but knowing the terrain by studying a map before going out, having the right tools with me, and growing up in the woods got me home just fine. I don't know that this thing actually navigates for you, but I wouldn't use it if it did, I enjoy landnavigation to much to use a GPS..I would never own one.
What I meant about going out farther was the little extra knowledge that IF anything did happen (broken leg, fall) that I could call for help. You can plan for anything, and be a super hiker, but you can still get hurt. I would think of it as an insurance policy for my kids. I certainly wouldn't rely on it. Thats not my style, and the fact that there are city people getting themselves stranded, or in trouble isn't how I plan for my adventures. I'm not to proud to not use something like that if I had to.

Hey Guys..

Before buying one of these I'd have Doug Ritter look into it..

Doug recently had a warning up about something along these lines...
Hopefully Doug will chime in and give his oppinion on it..

Thanks Mete..

If it isn't a true PLB, don't count on your SAR being able to find it. I didn't see anything there to make a conclusion, but given other drek pretending to be PLBs that has gone on the market, I'm hesitant until I see something more than a pretty advertising blurb.

This is not something you want to do on the cheap.

How is this thing gonna protect me from an angry grizzly...:) Ho I know , while he chew's on my leg I can call for help...dawn technologie it never stop's!!!
