New tilting 2x42

FYI, I was grinding some 14c28n outside on Monday. Little breezy and some of the shavings either blew into control box or it overheated or electronic component failure. Needless to say motor stopped. I shut off power to let things cool, motor quite warm. Upon turn on belt attempted to move, heard “pop” from control box and saw puff of smoke. While talking with Grizzly, opened box, saw melted solder splattered on speed display pcb. Grizzly was very professional and courteous. They are sending a new box as soon as it is available.

Upon inspection there is an opening where metal debris can enter control. It appears to have two additional cord openings, they are on “bottom” of box, close to bottom of platen. Right where shavings will be leaving belt. Even with water trap under belt, debris accumulated on frame etc. With new box I’ll definitely close up those openings just as a precaution.image.jpg

Thats awesome man! Would you say you could possibly

That is awesome man! Do you think you can make a 6 or 8 inch contact wheel work with a 2x48 belt for doing hollow grinds?
Curious: Have you figured out a good way to get a 6-10” contact wheel installed on one of these?

Anyone else get a shipping notification from Grizzly regarding what looks like a grounding wire? I've got no communication from them, just a shipping notification, I've had my grinder (still in the box until I get the time to set it up) since late December.

I see on their reviews there are a number of people that have had the motors let out the magic smoke... I have to imagine that is related...

Yep. I just received my grounding wire today.

That explains why the machine LIT me up when I pulled it towards me to record the video for this thread (check out 40 seconds in on my video on page 4).

Just another reason I NEVER buy first production cars. It seems to be that all the tweaking to make this model usable makes it unrealistic for first time buyers. I wish it wasn't so but it seems so. Grizzly had the opportunity to knock this out of the ball park but failed miserably. A swing and a miss. Just goes to show you the CEO's have no clue what the market really wants.

I had my fingers crossed for this one ☹️, I love the little 2x42 and 2x48 2 wheel grinders (Craftsman and the others).
If they came out with a two wheel like that in a VS I’d retire my 2x72’s (well, almost).

Well the grinder has been working excellent, I haven't been shocked, I like the speed control, it's very upgrade friendly. i'm just a hobby maker but I've probably burned up about 25-30 2x48 belts since I've gotten it. The only gripe I have is that grizzly sent that damn wiring upgrade signature only. When I got home from work I had a note on the door. Bastards!

Well after reading the schematic and repair instructions I agree with grizzly. I would have thought the ground bond thru the frame and control harness would have been plenty. Apparently that green powder coat they use on everything is dense as hell. Just binding the motor directly to the cntl box using the existing mounting hardware. Eeezypeezy. The schematic they sent with it though makes me think the Bl,Yl,Br wires going what ever that component is the possible key to adding a reverse function though. The other colors are step triggers it would appear.

As i previously stated my original burnt up in December. I just received its replacement. According to Grizzly website they addressed some of the motor issues. First thing I noticed is max RPM now listed as 3500, not 5000. Second motor rated at 3/4hp. I thought originally rated as 1hp, but not certain. Everything else appears to have remained the same. I did a bit of handle shaping, nothing too heavy. Belt tracked fine, but shut unit off and then attempted to restart. Nothing. After removing power, unit started fine. I’ll keep an eye on it. We’ll see, I’m sort of wishing I put my dollars toward a 2x72. Hoping for the best.

Wow, I've had a couple problems with hard parts and they've sent them to me in couple days. I'm just waiting for mine to burn up and I'm gonna replace it with a motor from servomotorkits and have reverse and a bit more power, currently working fine though. I've added several upgrades, converted it to spring tension and have a slack belt attachment so I can run 2*72 j flex on it for wood and softer stuff. I think it will still be useful even after I finally spring for a 2*72. Hopefully someone will run some specials near bladeshow. I've been seeing more and more knifemaker stuff on fb marketplace. Kinda feels like the forged in fire people are starting to sale all their stuff, or could be the economy? I don't know, I just work and sneak out to the forge when I can.

Anyone try using 1x42 belts on this? I have several I would like to continue using and be able to have a single unit in shop to take up less counter space. I would upgrade to 2” belts as needed.

I have considered buying some 1" precision ground 1084 to make a platen to swap out with my original platen so I can run the 1" surface conditioning belts. I feel like I could be more accurate with thinner belts but I haven't actually tried it yet. If you watch Neil Kamimura kukri YouTube build he cuts his belts in half for this exact reason to run slack belt.
