Just posting to say Hey to any makers in the Anchorage area. Just moved here and would appreciate any heads up on where any knifemaking supplies and such could be found locally. Also, if there are any salvage yards or such to scrounge up things like a new motor for my grinder.

Thanks, Ken

Mark Knapp is close by. I met him at a hammer in about three years ago and also got some very nice mamoth ivory from him.

There is another maker just off International Airport Way but I do not remember his name. I stopped in to pick up a fishing license from his store before flying out to Iliamna. He pretty much "flpiped out" when I told him I was using leafspring to forge blades at the time. Might be a good one to skip.

Alaska Abrasives can steer you in the correct direction (907-337-7062). Bob Willis is the person you want to speak with. He has taught most of the knifemakers in the Anchorage area. He taught me and is the finest person you will get to know. Bob does heat treating and I highly recommend him.

You might look up Nelson Stimaker, he is a taxidermist and knows many folks in different trades, I used to trade with him all the time, really nice guy too.

I was stationed at Elmendorf for a bit. It's beautiful! I think the owner of pac knives...Carey Whales I think was his name, made knives. You'll find pac knives in the northway mall. He sales some mall ninja stuff as well as his own make.

Man I miss mountains. What is your AFSC? That base is a busy one, but holy crap it was a ton of fun there.

Haley Bell (username and real) is Alaska based. Might want to PM or email her to get the skinny. Glad to see on BF!!!!

Thanks for the info guys. Internet searchs were not bringing back much for Anchorage for knifemaking. I know plenty of places online to get supplies but I hate waiting for an order and I much prefer to see something in person before buying. Plus sometimes you just don't know if something will work till you see it. Namely parts for Homemade Grinders.

You can also check with Alaska Gun in Anchorage (also a member on this site). They are a wealth of info...
