SO, I just got started (sort of) with pounding on hot metal, making flat-ish shapes. I started out with a RR sprike that I found on post during PT.
My question is this- I am thinking of trying to pound a spike out of the hammer on the Cold Steel trail hawk. Could I just get it cherry red-hot and start beating on it?
I also would like to try making a hook-type shape under the bit, to sharpen, kind of like a hooking edge. Do the experienced guys here think this is possible? How do I go about heat-treating it afterwards? Would it be easier/better to aneal the bit, grind/file the shape I want, then re-harden it?
Thanks for the help.
