I've never bought a knife over $100 but I've heard a lot of good things about Busse. I like all kinds of knives (fixed blades though) in three main classes: a smaller fixed for delicate tasks, a 6-7inch (some would say combat/utility), and a large chopper. Would any of you fellas be kind enough to point me in the direction of where to look at on each of those three types?

My friend said get a Battle Mistress, but I have no idea what that is other than I think it's a large chopper which if thats the case maybe he was right.

But do they have smaller knives too for various purposes. Now I collect (especially WW2 and some current tactical weaponry) and hunt/fish so I like em all if they are of good quality and mostly I prefer ones made in America.

So what are some common Busse's I can start looking at and maybe find some reviews on. I'd appreciate any help gentlemen. Thank you.

William

If you want to start with a small knife, the CABS are currently available directly from Busse. I got mine a few weeks ago and I still get over how much I truly enjoy this knife.

The Anorexic BOSS Street currently for sale on the Busse Combat site is a great knife. If you wanted something a little shorter, then check out the resale market for the Active Duty and Game Warden. Both come in many flavors, so shop and learn before you buy.

In the 6 - 7" range you have many choices. The ASH-1 is very popular. Again it comes in many models. SFNO is a great knife at 7". SARSquatch is a bargain on the resale market.

Busse knows choppers, so you have a lot of choices. Two recent ones are readily availiable at a good price, the BWM and the B11. These are on the lighter side, but will chop. If you like haevy beasts, then look for FFFBM or NMFBM.

Enjoy the quest! :D

William, Welcome to Bladeforums!!!

As you will note from the responses you got, acronyms are very common when referring to Busse knives. CLICK HERE to see a thread where some of them are defined, although that thread hasn't been updated for several years.

Resinguy's recommendations for HogCult.com and BusseCollector.com are valuable resources for what the acronyms mean. They also have a ton of other info on Busse knives and the community of people, both users and collectors, who are the Hog brethren.

For a large chopping knife, the various incarnations of the Battle Mistress (BM) are very good recommendations. While the swords can chop, they are simply too long for general day-to-day carry. The Killa Zilla in both its versions may be able to out-chop the BM's, but again their size will likely restrict their carry to "in the pack, not on the pants".

For a medium size knife, the Steel Heart has been the iconic Busse for many years and makes a very tough mid-size blade. However, it is nearly the size and weight of the BM. My recommend for a mid-size knife is to try and find an old Basic 7, which has moulded Resiprene-C (a very tough rubber-type material) for a handle, versus the micarta or G-10 scales that are typically found on the newer models.

For a smaller knife that will be likely restricted to cutting and slicing chores, I recommend the skinniest knife you can find. Unfortunately, most of the Busses are much thicker than my preference in this field. I like slicers 'n dicers at 1/16" stock or less, hopefully quite a bit less. Among the small Busse knives, I guess the Active Duty (AD) I had years ago was perhaps the sharpest, so would be my strictly-Busse choice.

Please keep us updated on how your search goes. Warning -- Busse knives can be very addictive, so figure on being impoverished by buying them like the rest of us in no time. ;) :D

I appreciate it guys. I think you have given me enough information to read up on all day!

Wow these are some nice looking knives. I may just end up addicted to them!

I may just end up addicted to them!

You'd better change "may" to "will". Welcome aboard. Go with the NMFBM for your chopper and a Boss Street for your smaller blade. There are many options with Busse, that's where the addiction part comes in:thumbup:

Like was already suggested, the CABS is available at the company website right now, and it's a great knife.

I'm currently drooling over one of these Busse ASH-1. That thing is freakin' awesome. WOW. That blade stock is so thick too. The handles are beautiful. Now I see why they are expensive.

trying to find the CABS on the site, is it the busse company store? Or is it on Bussecombat?

OK I found it on bussecombat. Actually those are a little cheaper than expected. Anyone know what that knife I mentioned would cost and where to get one? The ASH-1 or ones similar to it. I'm only seeing three knives on the whole site.

There is usually only one or two models available from Busse at a time. They make those knives to order for a few months, then a new model is put up.

Right now it is the CABS. A couple of months ago it was the Killa Zilla II. Before that, the Bushwacker Mistress and the Boss Street.

If you want an ASH-1 or similar, your only option right now is the secondary market: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=804

It's been a while since there has been a mid-sized Busse up on the company site (The Tank Buster, and there have been two smaller knives and two big choppers since then), so we might be due for one. The CABS has been up for a while now, so something new is probably coming along shortly.

As I mentioned, the ASH-1 comes in several versions, coated or satin, and in three thicknesses. The CG at 0.32" is stupid thick, IMO. The Skinny at 0.22" is the thinnest, IIRC.

Except for the stuff at BCS or Busse Comabt, all your shopping will be on the secondaty market, ie the Exchange here or eBay. Selection and prices have never been better. You can search the Exchange to get a feel for past sales prices.

Welcome to the madness!:D

and Congratulations!

RUN, RUN Far Away before the addiction pulls you in with it's sharpness!

Kidding WELCOME ABOARD

WELCOME TO THE SICKNESS!!!

Well, so much good info has been given to you already, but...

For a medium/large camp knife - there are some REDICUOUS prices on the SARSquatch right now over on the exchange.

Fantastic all-arounder camp knife that can do a bit of everything and the price makes it a veritable steal. Its as "skinny" as the Skinny ASH, a few extra inches, a more comfy and versatile grip, bigger choil which is a huge plus when wearing gloves in the winter and much much cheaper and more readily available.

Have fun!

Welcome to insanity! If you like the ASH-1 don't forget to check out the FSH and the HH FSH, and if you like crazy thick the HOGFSH. I am working on getting a Satin Sabre grind HH FSH, that is gonna be a beast of a user!

Also do not discount the other end of the family. The Rats and Dogs are a little easier on the wallet and kick a whole lot of butt for the $$, not to mention they have the same warranty.

Another good resource is Eric's Specs and Weights sticky at the top of the Swamp Rat Forums page.

Have fun!

well thanks guys, now I have the information to keep myself updated on these knives. I know this isn't the right forum, but since it was just mentioned it reminded me; Robo was mentioning that the Rats and Dogs are cheaper. Do mean both of those as Swamp Rat knives?

Thanks guys!

tyvm kind sir

...oh my gosh. Some of these are just so...beautiful. I shouldn't be here. Man look at those howling rats. Looks like Scrap Yard only has a small knife for sale right now (and another one I'm not sure what it is).

Ok, so are they only sold on the company sites or can you find them in retail stores? For some reason I'm doubting places like Amazon carry knives of this caliber.

Busse sells knives through their three main sites + the Busse Company Store, which is an independent retail operation + Busse showing at certain shows around the country, with Blade being the Big Daddy, worthy of a pilgrimage + Mike (thatmguy) has a table at gun shows in Columbus OH and Indianapolis, IN.

Right now Scrap Yard has the very nice skinny Scrapivore LE and a the Scrapizashi sword. Next will be the Combat Grade Scrapivore, a little thicker, coated instead of satin, and cheaper.
