Hi everyone, I am new to this forum so forgive me if this is not the correct place to post this question. I have a KMG grinder and I love it. Very well built and smooth however I have one issue that I was wondering if any of you guys have the same issue. I do a lot of flat grinds with a scandi grind every now and then. The platen on my grinder is beginning to wear a groove in the area where I flat grind. I have rotated the platen and even got a second platen but it to is wearing a groove. the steel is 1018 crs and I was considering hardening the platen by heat treating but since the 1018 is a low carbon steel I don't think it would heat treat well. Do any of you guys have an issue with your platens grooving and if so what do you do to correct this issue?

Thanks

Looks up ceramic platen liner. Some folks use glass, but there is a fear of things happening if the glue let loose. There is a guy here, Nathan the Machinist, that makes hardend A2 platens. I've heard good things about them.

Get glass, buy two while your at it. Even the glass will groove after a while. I replace glass at least once a year.

Thanks guys for the help. Fred, I have your bubble jig on its way to me. I decided to give it a try to help get more consistent grinds.

I too would suggest a pyroceramic glass liner. Secondly, I also have a bubble jig. Great tool that has helped me tons

Find Nathan Carothers (spelling?) aka Nathan the machinist and buy a platen from him and ask about the chiller also. His platens are super hard and nice.

I like grinding on a steel platen, but every now and then I take mine off and flatten it. I make a new one if I need to.
