Hello I'm looking into getting a edc, but with all the different types, prices, and steels I get confused. I'm not interested in spending a lot maybe 50-60 $ cause it will be a work knife. anyhow i know I want a 50/50 tanto drop point type of blade like the gerber 06 manual combat but it out of my budget. Is also like a asisted opening knife with a liner lock maybe ( definitely no lock back) blade length 3.5 or little more, the ones that have caught my eye are.
Gerber 06 fast tanto
Sogzilla,sog flash 2,.
The part I get confused with is the blade steel.can someone helsomeone help plz.here are the types
4034
440c
8cr13mob
7cr17
420if
Au8. I appreciate any input on the knives I've listed ( good or bad) and suggestions if you can lead me to any other knives I might like.

Just a completely individual opinion here but I would stay away from assisted open blades.

They aren't any faster than a flicker with a smooth action, if that's what you're thinking. I had a Gerber and Rat model 1 with assisted open and they weren't nearly as fast as my PM2 with a simple finger flick.

For 50-60 bucks, I'd go with a Spyderco Endura. Made in the US and VG-10 is "pretty decent" steel.

My $0.02.

AUS 8 is pretty decent. Very tough, and easy to sharpen. I never heard of some of those listed, such as "420if", but I tend to avoid any of the 400-series stainless as it is rarely heat treated properly (with the exception of Buck Bros). I think you could get a Cold Steel knife in that price range and they are very substantial knives, arguably better than current SOG knives.

There are some bargains in the Cold Steel lineup, for example a $90 knife for $32:

Total brain fart! Yes, Endura is indeed made in Japan, not USA.:p
