I just purchased my first gec last week an 85 cap lifter,so naturally it got put to work.well in one week it has a few black ⚫ an 1/8" big as well as a sky full of little dots.ive seen countless so called carried displayed on the forums and they don't have that patina that I got in a week,is that natural.dont get me wrong this is not bothering me one iota. Just curious.

A picture would be helpful to diagnose but that sounds normal to me. They're carbon steel blades so they discolor up pretty quickly when around any moisture. Black is fine, that's normal patina, but keep an eye out for actual red/brown rust. A little oil goes a long way with carbon steel knives. Mineral oil is a good go to and is readily available at any pharmacy near you.

Carbon steel blades will stain and darken with time, it's just the nature of blade steel. You'll see a lot of talk about forced patina, it's thought that this makes a protective layer on the. steel. Most of the knives I've carried over the years have had carbon steel blades. I just wipe them pff after use and let them do wha they want to do.

If you've been using it to open bottles etc this will happen unless you polish them and apply coatings of oil. Some patina can look very good after time but sometimes it can be a mess...Here's my Beer Scout that not only opened beer, cider, tonic water but cut lemons & limes  Many GECs do lead restricted, sheltered, lives apparently -despite allegations of constant carry & use🤣

This is one of the dots,I do cut alot of wild rhubarb that is moist.when I walk the dog he always goes in the river and likes rolling in dead fish.i cut and use the rhubarb to rub him down so he doesn't shake in the truck.also it takes away the fish smell so the wife let's us back in the house.but I wipe the blade with pant leg after.and some oil rag wipe down.but I don't mind the color.just curious.

Hillbilly that is some patina.ya I take an orange on my walk and quarter it every day.ive only had the 85 and charlie sent me the harness Jack's.I'll say this about gec, they are one solidly built knife.i like bigger knives in winter because of the need for mitts.i will say I used the awl years ago on my sak to chip ice from base of windshield wipers.in that area that freezes around it,if you don't watch they blow your wiper motor.

Weird that the patina is a perfect circle. The blade must have been lying perfectly flat when the drop of juice made its stain.

Ed I actually went through that thread quite a few months back as a lurker, maybe last year some time.but no Jesus image that I saw.

Patina forms quick on carbon steel, especially if you're using it. Don't worry though, you'd have to intentionally neglect carbon steel in a really bad environment for a long time to actually do any kind of damage at all. I've taken mine on rainy camping trips, river float trips, and worked in wet breweries and never had any actual damage beyond a few rust spots that wiped right off.

Its just patina, like others said. The reason you hardly see GECs with patina on here is because people are afraid to cut anything with their pocketknives lest they rub off the precious resale value. I say you only live once though, and you cant take it with you when you go, so use your knife.

The other reason I hear is that they're "saving them for the kids" -- as if.

If "the kids" ever stopped staring at a screen long enough to pick up a knife and try to cut something, I expect the attempt would be followed up by a trip to urgent care and a mandatory questioning by the local constabulary on why they were in possession of a "deadly weapon."

Plus, if the apple falls not far from the tree, they'll probably be too busy preserving the value of their futuristic pocket safety lasers by refusing to use them. 🤣

Just figured out how I got two perfect circle patina on my knife, the round ball like granular from oranges.also might of found away to get some patina off,was slicing a buddies garden tomatoes he gave me and noticed a hell of alot of patina, then an hour later I shaved some birch to use for a fire tomorrow after Thanksgiving dinner, and some patina looked removed, but who knows.now when I open an MGd tomorrow at fire pit will see more
