New to Knives and the Forum

Just remember a carbon steel needs more cleanliness then a stainless, will rust quicker if not taken care of, also will often dull quicker then your premium stainlesses but also will take much more of a beating without breaking. (And that said, keep it well maintained, wiped down, a bit of oil maybe as needed, rust won't be an issue).

On my bugout bag I have a SOG Seal PUP Elite, Under my desk I have a CRKT Ultima, In my Bugout Bag I have a CRKT m16 special forces folder. What I need is something to carry concealed in my pocket or on belt when I am away from my bugout bag-desk for general use and SHTF scenario. I am very ok with getting 2 knives as I definitely need something to practice sharpening on.

Welcome to the forum!

I think your best bet to answer this question is to take a look at the EDC V thread ;) Check out the combos of fixed blades and folders that other like minded members are carrying. Most everybody posts what brand/ model they carry, and if they don't; you can always ask and you will get a reply.

I personally carry KA BAR BK&T's for my big SHTF fixed blades (check out a BK2 or BK3), and my EDC is;

KA BAR BK11, ZT 0801, ZT 0562, and ZT 0121

This is arguable at best and won't help his situation much since many of the knives he should be looking at would be along they lines of more simple steels for ease of maintenence and field sharpening, at the very least. Not only keeping in mind he likely can't afford/doesn't want to spend the coin or isn't his best option being a s110v, m390 or similar.

For what he is looking for I would think that 1095, 1095 cro van, 12cr, O1, A2, 52100, or the like, would be in his best interests. Though I would look for a coated blade like the Becker BK14 or 11 since he is in a humid area.

For rust prevention you can use chapstick, wax, a multitude of oils, or a number of other products. All while generally being easier to maintain, sharpen And being tougher while taking a finer edge then the majority of the stainless options in his price range.

12cr, s35vn, aeb-l might be his best choices for a stainless. Though regarding aeb-l, I am not sure how chippy it can be.

They can be neck knives should you choose to wear them as such. You can also cord wrap the sheaths and wear them comfortably as a cross draw on your belt :thumbup:

I'm gonna assume you didn't read the other posts in this thread.... I never said anything bad about simple carbon steel, and actually made the recommendation that an ESEE, Becker, or Grindworx simple carbon "neck knife" would be perfect for what he was looking for: saying that it "will often dull quicker then your premium stainlesses" is not argumentative though, its actually been tested and proven more then once. Not some big bad omen against it, there are many things they do better then even your most premium stainlesses, fact is every steel to date has pros and con's, there is no "perfect" steel, (yet), but but edge retention in your premium stainless variety does tend to be better then in your basic carbons.

I also never suggested he buy into a tougher premium of 110v or 390 but actually suggested in a stainless that he get an Elmax or s35v, something of moderate toughness, but still easy enough to work with if you know what you're doing, something well within in his price range, as well as buying a cheaper similar model, a "generic" version of whatever he chooses, in order to practice his sharpening skills on it without ruining his new "nicer" blade, be it carbon or stainless.

The Spyderco Endura Emerson is an excellent balance of utility EDC and backup weapon, it has an almost 4" saber ground blade and deploys extremely fast with the Emerson wave opener. Also, the VG10 steel will hold up well in the humid climate of Florida.
