I'm new to Bladeforums, recently decided to switch from my functional but not very carry-friendly Leathermans to real folders to switch up my EDC options. even years back when I was the oddball multi-tool guy surrounded by folder nuts, I knew Spyderco was special, so that's the first brand I'm looking into for a quality blade.

Never owned a good folder before, accustomed to a Leatherman Wave with three inch blade to follow Illinois blade laws. EDCDepot is carrying the discontinued Jester model for a good price, and the thing just caught my eye from the start. The size, features, and general style just makes me want to hold one and have it around, keep it around for formal or knife-phobic events, my better half called it 'Pretty' so she'd be fine borrowing it. And for the price, it's a nice sample taste of Spydey quality.

And, maybe later on...Okay, so maybe I have the Delica Wave profile open in the other window, who doesn't.

Am I making a good choice with the Jester or should I look into an updated model for some reason or another?

I'd go for the new Ladybug, now available at the finest pharmacy.

Personally, I find both the Ladybug and Jester too small to be very useful in my hands. I keep a Jester on my keyring, and frankly, I don't even remember the last time I had the blade open, and I'm not sure I've ever cut anything with it.

I really like my UKPK for discrete carry. Blade under 3" so it is legal most places, deep carry wire clip to keep it unobtrusive, linerless G-10 handle to keep the weight down and flat ground S30V steel for the business of cutting. What more do you need? :D

A lock? :p

Sorry, couldn't resist.

All I have to say is I love my jester. I want to get another w/ full serations.

Jester is a nice knife if you want a keychain knife. Consider the updated Ladybug too - it seems to combine the best features of the Jester and Ladybug with VG-10 steel.

If you want a small knife though, I would go a little bigger than the Jester and get something like a Dragonfly. Both the FRN and SS handled versions are really nice, and they cut like bigger knives.

For a bigger knife with a sub-3 inch blade, don't forget about that Delica - very comfy handle, nice pocket clip, and VG-10 steel at a nice price. Despite having other more sophisticated and expensive knives, the Delica 4 is my favorite.

i'd vote for a Dragonfly or a Delica4.....ya can't go wrong...and they're a little more useful sized than the keychain sized Jester......but if you're set on that sized knife then Go for it....

The Jester is great little bitty knife but it is quite a bit smaller blade than pretty much any standard sized multi tool blade (roughly half the handle size and half the blade size). As long as you realize how little it is; I'm confident you would be happy with it. The other posters are pushing for a bit bigger knife as it has more utility. :)

You will be very happy if you order the Waved Delica. I have played with a zip-tie on my Delica and it opens very quickly when I draw it from my pocket. The Delica is a fine knife, one that will serve you well, especially if you do not get too nutty with this hobby and end up with dozens of Spydies like I have. Don't forget to check out a fully serrated Spyderco too, perhaps a SE Cricket? You'll be amazed at how easily serrations will zip through materials.

Had the Jester since the 31st, it's definitely something on a different level. The thought put into the two-level blade shape, the handle design and the materials are superb. It's certainly tiny to hold it in your palm, but the concaves on the handle give it a solid grip. Took a day of keeping it by my desk, but even with its size I can easily open/close it with one hand without looking at it. Was odd getting used to the type of lock used on Spydercos, but that's coming from a liner-lock Leatherman convert.

First cutting test was on the packaging it came in. Went through cardboard like warm butter, and with my thumb over the spine of the blade I could actually cut legible words into a thick plastic shipping envelope. This knife quickly became an extension of my hand. Not something I'd take out in the woods or on an occasion where I know I'll be cutting all day, but for lighter jobs I just have an intuitive fluidity with this thing probably stemming from the design.

Extremely classy looking thing, that unusual blade profile is just nice to look at. Pending I do go Delica, this thing will stay in my arsenal as a formal occasion/ultralight gear. Very amazed with my first Spydey, can't promise it'll be my last.
