New to knives looking for my first knife.

I use my SAK a lot don't get confused into thinking I want to replace it, I just find myself wanting a more capable knife. Plus my SAK is on my keys and can be a bit of a pain to use at times.

What do you guys think about different types of steels? I only have seen elmax and your cheap 420. The 0909 has S35VN for the blade.

Kizer has knives with both VG10 and CPM S35VN. Those are both great steels. You can also go to BladeHQ, USAMADEBLADES for example and look for blades in your price range. I would make list of knives I like then come back and let people weigh in on what's best.
Here is good link to learn about the different steels. http://www.bladehq.com/cat--Steel-Types--332

You get a bigger SAK and don't keep it on your keys. But I understand you want something different. The Delica is the one have recommended. One of my favorites is the Spyderco Native in S35V but it exceeds your budget. VG-10 steel is good. The Delica has a slightly longer blade which may be more useful for cutting an apple.

Cheap: Rat's 1 or 2; Avispa or Zancudo; Utilitac.

Mid-range $$: something Kershaw or Buck.

$100-ish: one of the basic Spydercos.

Any of these will give you a good start until you can study more here.

SOG spec elite! VG10 steel, stainless liners, lightweight, patented arc lock makes it ambidextrous and it's under a hundred dollars!

I like DeadboxHero's response. That's a good place to start but I'd have to say the paramilitary 2 was the best option if you want to get a very good knife that will cut like no other with the full flat grind with no bevels to dull the apex. Plus it has a high thickness to give you plenty of room to learn to sharpen and with a s30v blade all the way up to a s110v you have endless options to try out other steels in the style of knife you become accustomed to. Do yourself a favor and get the para 2 and you can thank me later. I've owned hundreds of knives from benchmade to customs and none are much better than the para 2. Yes you can get better bearings to flip on and automatics but after all the fan fair it has to do one job and that is cut while staying locked up and for these two things you can't beat the para 2 for your first EDC. Buy any other knife and I'll prove to you my para 2 can out perform it hands down (I should mention I had my para 2 re-ground to very thin and re-heat treated to 64 HRC which is the max for s110v) but even before I customized it she still out cut any production knife I've found!

Cold Steel CODE 4! Can't go wrong.

I'd like to stay in the $100 range I've done some viewing I like the zt0801bw but they are a little high on price saw one for 115 but it sold fast.

Edit I should have said a budget of 80 to 120 which is what I was meaning when I said around 100. I didn't mean to confuse people into thinking that was the limit of my search.

Well guys I went with a paramilitary 2 It will be in the mail tomorrow pretty excited about it. Looking for the Blurpie scales for it if anyone has any.
