New to Knives, New to Blade Forums, wanted to introduce myself

Was looking at a flame Ti/marble carbon fiber jack but they are all sold out. Read a review about blade play and centering being off though. .. .. .Not so sure about the jack now. I think I'm gonna snag a WE then work on another Reate when I figure out which one I like best. Thanks again for all three input everyone. I like this community a lot so far.

Socal EDC, if I could have an autoknife id already own an ultratech hellhound in carbon fiber.... But Ca laws are unfortunate. Although I have been informed by a couple people that legally you can own an auto knife in CA, you just can't carry it, buy it, sell it, or drive with it on your person. Which basically means you can have it if you inherit it but you can't carry it, you can just look at it and then put it back in the safe .

Welcome to a slippery slope! In my opinion $650 is where Fit and Finish, diminishing returns really kicks in, especially for production knives. Customs really run a gamut, you can defiantly get some great handmade customs for very reasonable. My customs from Aaron Fredrick, Walter Wells, Jack Stottlemire (Rustick Knives), and Taryn Collins (Wind River Wild) have all been under $600, with some as low a $300. And custom fixed blades are often even more reasonable!

Thanks for the info, I feel a lot more confident with all of the great insight I've received .I think I'm gonna grab a couple production/mid tech knives and then start in to the Chris's Reeves and custom arena. Try and learn some more along the way. BTW I'm in San Diego if anyone wants to check out some knife shows or whatever.

Ill be the lone dissenter as I personally have not liked CRK when I have handled them with the exceptions being the Ti-Lock and the Mnandi. My dislike of CRK's other models isn't anything with their quality it is all about the feel and only those 2 models have felt right to me. I can't make much of any recommendation but if you can get your hands on some of what your interested in and see how you like it before you buy it.

I can relate a bit to this ... the first CRK I bought I ended up selling ... it was my first knife purchase in that price range except a couple custom fixed blades ...

and I found it felt thin or didn't fill my hand as I was used to ... and to be honest I didn't give it long enough to get a fair chance ...

but CRK again called to me I bought a micarta version and it was great ... now I own a handful and even the plain janes are great knives ...

it just took some use to truely appreciate just what CRKs offer ...

so although I know CRK isn't for everyone ... myself and a few friends I know weren't sure at first but now they and I love my CRKs in several variations.

So I just bought a WE 819a, after reviewing all of the knives I was looking at the 819 just felt right. the one piece titanium frame and M390 blade with Integral lock just made sense to me.

I may get a WE 604 next or a Liong Mah.... we shall see.

CRK Sebenza is a good base to see what f&f you get for that price. I don't think you get better f&f after the $500+ price point. It's a preference for material & design then./QUOTE]
AGREED: I've owned more than twenty CRK's although nearly all of them are gone now. But the Sebbie is so VERY difficult to beat...even with a custom. I've owned various customs into the mid-700's and sold them again rather quickly...not too impressive.
Presently, I am carrying a Chinese collab with Ray Laconico...the MassDrop Keen Laconico folder in S35VN.
It is a awfully nice knife for $155 and it impresses the heck of me.
Throwing money at a wall full of knives doesn't always give you a great knife; it might just bust your balloon instead.

Reate makes the Liong Mah knives, so they are essentially the same in terms of quality, F&F and materials, you just pay a premium for the Liong Mah Designs since it's his own brand. Is it worth it?
I didn't know this...good info.

Welcome good sir! Looks like a sweet collection so far. The great part about collecting knives is that there is such a range of blades that no matter what price range you're looking at, you will find ones that are worth it for you! I'm relatively new here so far, but there are ton of knowledgeable and helpful people on this forum that I've seen.

That looks pretty cool man and I've heard excellent things about it. Still trying to decide what ZT blade I want to save up for. This is probably a tech question, but how did you post that picture in your comment instead of as an attachment at the bottom?

Welcome ErocSD, I'm at about the same point as you are on this journey Lol. From every thing I have absorbed from this board it seems like a Sebenza would be the next most logical choice but then again nothing about this hobby/Pasion is logical . BTW how do you like that ZT 0450CF? I just picked one up and It's quickly become my favorite flipper.

Sweet collection sir! What is the third one from the left in your initial picture? I really like that one, haha.

I recently got into knives, like a year ago. Bought a cheap chinese metal Kershaw at Big 5 on a whim, my fishing knife was pretty banged up. realized I missed the days of having a knife for fishing and every day carry.

Then a calgunner (gun blog) posted a sale on a Kershaw Leek ($27 on amazon) and that was my first american made blade. I was surprised the detail compared to the chinese blades.

Picked a couple Zero tolerances and then recently bought a lambert/reate. Man what a difference in fit and finish. I can see you get what you pay for in upper tiers. Of course there is always a plateau where you start getting less for the money. and that's where I'm at.

What's the next step? A full custom blade or a Chris Reeve's Sebenza, Chavez or Liong mah/Reate?

Are the full Custom Knives really worth the extra cost? These knives often go for over $1k and I feel like that's a lot of money to purchase something without knowing what I'm getting for the money. Is the fit & Finish really that much better on a $2500 handmade custom knife compared to a semi custom midtech Ling Mah or WE, Chris reeves is basically what I'm asking.

I'm sure there is a huge market for custom blades and I'm sure I'm not going to lose money. I'm just trying to rationalize it for myself I guess...... it's better than wasting my money on beer and food that has no value after it's done.

either way, here's a pic of my small collection for now.....Thanks for looking and any input. Sorry the lighting isn't better.

Yeah its hard to recommend a CRK anymore than they already have been. Though anything by Reate or WE will likely be just as badass.

I personally own a WE Drakon(819) and its one of the nicest knives i've ever owned. Though it is my first integral.
Reeves all the way

Use a photo hosting service like imgur and then embed the thread link. For ZT I really like the 0450/0452 line but the 0920 is my favorite by far .the 0804 is pretty awesome I'd you can find one. A little bigger than the old 452 but it's got more belly on the blade .

Reate/Lambert crossroads. My favorite knife. If I could keep only one knife that would it. I can't wait for the Augustus to land in March .it's supposed to be basically the same handle but a tanto blade and micarta scales .

Anyone know where I can get a WE 604F ? I can't seem to find one anywhere. it's showing discontinued.
