New to Knives

Don't give away the bugout too soon.
I flip back and forth between Spyderco, Benchmade and kizer love.

The kizer feist, mini-bugout, Chappelle and dragonfly are my most carried knives.

I usually carry a traditional knife as well.

Great hobby, great forum, great community. You are now collecting the world's oldest tool. Come for the knowledge, stay for the friends you'll make--and enjoy a few laughs along the way.

I've kind of settled (so far) on Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kizer but I know I'll end up with a lot more than just those.
In the excitement you have forgotten what you once knew. That the most comfortable knife to use is the one that‘s is always in your pocket. After a while, you forget that it is there; but it somehow materializes in your hand when you need to cut something.

Get a basic sharpening stone and practice on that knife. Ignore any stray marks or scratches that come up, those will get worn away by future sharpening and use. You will eventually get to a point where you can put whatever edge you need on the knife in under a minute and will always be ready for any job with a fresh edge.

Exotic sharpening systems and blade steels have a use; mostly to restore knives that will seldom cut anything, so they may continue to look great when you pull them out of the safe. Knives that actually get used will always suffer edge wear regardless of the steel type, and will show evidence of carry and use on their finish throughout. Using an elaborate system to restore a factory-like edge on a using knife is like putting lipstick on a pig; evidence of use is all over the blade and not limited to the first mm along the edge, the material you are cutting will never know the difference in sharpening tools and it is never possible to restore a knife to new condition.

You don’t need to own many knives. But, if you are like most of us, you do so because you enjoy the beauty, history and technology of these tools and the many interesting people who use, collect and write about them.
