New to knives

If you are under a time constraint, and don't mind spending the extra $60, go with the ParaMilitary - I have two of them, and I carry one every day clipped to my pocket.

In the past, I used to carry (and still do sometimes, especially when traveling light) a Delica. The Paramilitary and the Delica could sort of be considered to be the same sized blade, except that the Para has a nicer handle. From what I've gleened, it is worth waiting for the Delica version 4 (although I have a couple of the version 3's). I'll buy a version 4, but the
ParaMilitary is ... a fantastic knife :D And, it's almost as lightweight as the FRN Delica (i.e. it's not as heavy as the lockback Manix style, and it
isn't a liner-lock like the Military is ---- not a liner lock fan myself; don't
trust them).

Sorry in advance to you liner-lock fans...:D

No one mentioned that while the Para is great(I love mine) it is a little unsuitable for lefties, as the clip only carries on the right. I'm right handed, but if I wasn't this detail would really bother me.

Another vote for the Para. Spydernuts waited for this "Military Jr." for quite a while, and it didn't disappoint. One of my favorite carries. If you're willing to spring for the $90-$100, this is the route to go. G-10 is a great outdoor scale, and the S30V is good stuff.

In FRN, I also like the $40 Native suggestion. New Graham has them for that price as well, I believe.

I have both the Para and the Native. I don't own the Delica 4, but I'm going to pick one up pretty soon.

I'd say if you want to get him something nice and fancy go with the Kopa, but only if he's going to have a real user/beater type knife also. Since you said this will probably last him for a long time and be his main knife I'd go against the Kopa.

Since he works in an office I'd say try and stay around 3" and under. That means the Mini Manix which is fully ambidextrous, and uses a lockback. This is a bit heavier than other options, but that's because it's insanely strong and stout.

Also there is the Paramilitary which can be opened and closed with either hand, but I think it is a lot more biased to righties, so keep that in mind.

The new Delica is a good ambi option and lighter than the other two models but not as tough, more of a balance.

I think the best option for would be the Para as long as he's a righty. He may dislike the compression lock because he won't be used to it, but give him time, he'll love it. The PM also can only be mounted for right handed tip down carry, I don't know which way he's used to, he may have been used to tip-up.

Compression lock is easy to use for lefties(at least to me anyway) and the clip being on the wrong side is something most of us got used to, until the handles with 12 holes came out;)

Okay, the consensus is in: I'm going to order the Para from New Graham today, and if he doesn't like it, then at least I can't say that I didn't try :o (He is right-handed, by the by.) I feel better buying him the nicer model because it is a gift after all, and the idea of "wow factor" appeals to me!

I plan on getting him this one and if he likes it, then maybe he'll get a few more Spydercos over the years since I know so much about them now, thanks to all of you!

The Para is a solid choice.

Don't you also need to get him a Sharpmaker to keep that thing shaving? :D

He has a knife sharpening kit that he uses on all our kitchen knives. He is obsessive about keeping things sharp, and also about being frugal. So I'd better not spend too much money - I'll wait and see if the kit he currently has will work or if I need to shell out even more. But I totally considered that - seems like everything you buy these days comes with a gazillion accessories!

P.S. I didn't mean to say that the Cricket was girly and I in fact plan on getting one for my husband's stocking next Christmas! :)

Hi Emkin,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx for the interest.

We are shipping quite a few Delica4's, so they're out there. It's a pretty hard model to beat. I'm carrying one today.

I just talked my sister into getting my husband the Cricket for his b-day (that money clip feature is the coolest thing ever), and the Delica 4 is next on my list - perhaps that will be my Spyderco! ;) Thanks, Sal!
