Thanks to CataD I received the HDFK in the mail this morning, which amazed me because it’s only Monday and he mailed it on Saturday!
I want to say thanks to CataD for getting it to me so quickly and for such a smooth transaction, you’re a credit to the forum.

Now to the good stuff, the HDFK.
Absolutely stellar knife, I really don’t know how else to say it. The grip fits my hands like the Machinist made it for me at special request. The fit and finish is flawless. I’m kind of a knife snob in so much as after all these years and spending stupid amounts of money on knives, I like them to be symmetrically ground- even, and clean. The HDFK checks every box, for the knife user, knife collector, and knife snob in me.

I really like the stonewash that they used on this at CPK. After having a few coated and satin Busse knives I’ll enjoy using this one more- no offense hogs. The stonewash reminds me of the stonewash on the CRK Nyala that I’ve used for years for deer hunting and woods work, just bulletproof for normal tasks. I don’t mind a knife looking like I use it but having one that stays nice with use is a plus in my book.

I don’t know if CataD used this one a bit or not but it was just less than scary sharp, a quick strop on the ceramic crock stick and
OH IS THIS THING SCAAAARY now !

I’ve never had a big blade that can take an edge like this! If it’s even half as durable as you all say, or Nathan’s vids prove, I’ll never sell this knife. With minimal work the HDFK became legitimately shaving sharp and chopped aged cedar without even bothering that edge.
I’d say that I see more D3V blades in my future but unless I “get to the Choppa” I won’t have any need unless I somehow ruin this seemingly indestructible knife.
I’ve made due with smaller blades in the woods for 30+ years of hunting, camping, hiking, 4 wheeling, etc. the 3-4 inch knives will still come on the trip but they’ve been officially replaced by the HDFK.

I guess I have one question since this is my first experience with 3V, how close to stainless is it?
I live in Michigan and we get the full force of all 4 seasons, my stainless blades don’t spot and I haven’t really needed to oil my carbon blades unless I’m storing them- if that helps at all.

I don’t want to leave out Eric at Mashed Cat who made yet another perfect sheath. His work is impeccable, but you all probably know that already.

Well, I’ll quit ranting and raving about the knife now- if you actually read all of this, thanks

Congrats! The HDFK is my favorite CPK!

Nice write up :-) the HDFK is truly a great knife :-)
The stainless question as I understood it, but I could be wrong lol. Is that 3v not so much but with Nathan’s D3v magic it’s gives it somewhat stainless characteristics ???
You could always post a question in the “ask Nathan thread”

Congrats on scoring an HDFK :-)

I have to agree I have several CPK knives now ... love them all ... but the HDFK is my favorite ...

and I've said it before I find myself comparing the handle fit and comfort of any knife I pick up to the HDFK ... I could live with that handle on every knife I own and I'd be happy.

Congrats on your first CPK ... you picked a good one to start with.

Nice write up :) the HDFK is truly a great knife :)

our heat treat does not use the secondary hardening hump as the industry standard heat treat. an unintended side-effect of this is forming less secondary chromium carbide, we leave as much carbon tied up in martensite as possible, which leaves more free chrome which has the effect of improving corrosion resistance. It was not the intent, just a happy side-effect.

Thank you very much. I have a feeling that this won’t be my last CPK.
I think I’m going to get a chopper soon and maybe a smaller blade down the line. Poor CRK Nyala, going to have to give it to my oldest boy.

Thank you very much for the reply, I’m looking forward to seeing how it holds up to the humid summer and wet winter. Everything else was answered quickly by the feel and a few chops into that cedar.

You are an amazing craftsman Sir.

Great write-up!

The HDFK is also my favourite CPK blade. It’s just THAT sweet!

That said, this new HDMC makes me giggle every time I fondle it. :D
Well you guys here sure are supportive of the HDFK love, I like this sub forum!!

You’re all killing me with these pics of the 10 inch choppers, that’s an itch I’m going to have to scratch.

Hey! I'm really glad you like it!! Thank you, as well, for the kind words and for the enjoyable transaction!

Regarding the HDFK, nope, haven't used it.. I got it some time ago for a friend, but he changed his mind about getting it, so I decided to keep it :)... Until a few days ago ;).

Again, thanks a lot and welcome to the CPK Forum! It's an awesome place!

I appreciate the thanks but you earned that praise. All transactions on the forum should be so good.
Thank you for the welcome.
Next time you see that friend thank him for me for changing his mind, I’m sure happy he did.
