New to me old spec 4.1!

Readtyme I put a not so good picture up a little while ago in the photo library that may help you as well showing the ones I have switched to new style hardware.

Readyme, there is a thread on new fasteners on 1st gen knives already showing a few and giving a little info that will help.
I remove my scales fairly often so the new hardware is great for that. I have swapped sets for a 1st gen 3.5/ edc-4/5/5.1 and 6 so far and using new gen 5.1 hardware a little post grinding was needed usually on 1 or 2 posts for a tight fit and some the scales will need a bit of countersink hole reaming to fit 100% flush.

You are correct Psybull. I have the tools and skills to make them fit so I ordered some based on what I saw in the threads. They are NOT a drop in fit so if you can't do the modding, they won't work.

Thanks to all who posted in here
You're right about this model being an absolute favorite and now I know why!

OP, how does the 4.1 and the 16 compare?
I have an old spec 4.1 but am interested in a 16 (full flat grind).

The 16 is great! Like I said, the handle is awesome and comfortable. The full flat grind does give it a nice bite into wood. I haven't used it on anything else. The bk16 is lighter because of the skeletonized handle and hollow plastic scales. Insane value. Get one!

HK, really like the new hardware on the 1st gen 4.1 you have there.
Silver I totally agree about the 1st gen w/ camo canvas/tumbled finish and hardware any model will always be a classic gso.
Right on, classic for sure!

Dudes, I bought an old spec 4.1 from a guy on Facebook. To start a little off topic: True facts about the knife become more than a little questionable when there were two previous owners. "Never used, shaving sharp" showed up on my door step as used looking, somewhat dull and a modded sheath.

Back on track! I know MANY here have or have had a 4.1 and the old spec models have been around for years, but for me, this is a really big deal.

I've said before that I like Beckers and their area was my first Bladeforums experience. My bk16 is an awesome knife. The size and design are perfect. In my early days in the Becker forum I would always see the very rare and coveted saber ground 16. Many of you know the saber 16 was only made for a tiny bit before it was replaced by the full flat ground version. I don't know if it was the mystical quality of the saber 16 or if I just always liked the look of saber ground blades, but I really liked the variation and disliked how it was so hard to come by and that any that were available were already used and modded.

A while later I saw a youtube review of a GSO sk4 and then the GSO 4.1 and another 4.1 and another. This GSO had all that I loved about that elusive bk16 (except maybe the world famous handle) and more. It had a similar size and the saber grind, but yet it came with a kydex sheath and micarta handles AND it was offered in several super steels. Add to that flawless after flawless review and a video of some nutcase (:D) rappelling using the 4.1 (edc) as an anchor point and I was sold!

I had quite a long journey to get here and never really had plans to get an old spec 4.1, but the opportunity presented itself and I couldn't pass it up. With what I described above, when I finally got this knife in my hand it took me back a couple years to when I thought a knife like this was too good to be true. As most of you already know, this is a sweet knife and a really great design. I immediately connected with it way more than my 3.5 and almost as much as my 5. I'm really looking forward to getting familiar with it. It fits my hand very well. It has good weight and balance with a filling handle. Somehow i felt like I had held it before, like the feel was instantly familiar.

Not only do I feel like one of the cool kids because I finally have a 4.1, but I have my first camo scales! The camo canvas seemed to be one of the most popular old spec handles, so when I see it I get a little nostalgic.

Note the modified sheath and extreme kydex scratches. I was so happy to get this knife, but there really is nothing like getting a GSO straight from the company.

Despite some material being removed from the top of the sheath, the click is still awesome and the retention is very strong.

Old school logo.

With the bk16.

Great fit in the becker sheath if I'm feeling extra tactical.

Pumpkin pie Poptart. Inspired by micahtbyrd.

Nice knife Silver! Now that you've had it for a while are you still in love with it?

Thanks!

First, I don't have nearly as much use with it compared to my 4.7 or especially my 5. BUT, from what I have done I really like it.

As far as objects that I've looked forward to or anticipated, few things have lived up to the hype and expectations that I build up in my mind. This 4.1 along with my other GSOs have never let me down with first impressions or after extended use. This 4.1 was everything I hoped it would be with the feel of ergonomics and capability in use. Further more, after spending a lot of time reading about and watching this knife online, it performed as amazingly as advertised and just felt so familiar.

As an example, I had done the same type of research on the bk16 as I did with the 4.1. When I got the bk16, it felt great and I liked it, but I was surprised how skinny the upper portion of the handle was and how it fit my hand overall. It was great, just not what I expected. With the 4.1 I couldn't get over how natural it felt, like I had held it before.

The overall feel of the 4.1 is great for me, too. Like you say, a very natural feel to it in just about any grip. I don't have a new model on order, but I go to sleep at night dreaming of the 4 Limited. :)

Nice knife Silver and good comparison the the BK16!
I like the BK16 as well but the new coating they are use if now seams like it would be too rough.

Thanks!

I think the same about the 4.1 and all of the old gen GSOs. The new handles and contouring feel great in my hand but the old ones worked well too. As I stated in another thread of the new handles are 100 out of 100 the old ones are 85+ out of 100. This is after several years or working with the old knives. Anyway, the 4.1 is a tough little knife.

Something to look forward to for sure.

I got my 16 a few years ago. The coating smoothed out in places with a little use and I expect it to wear away in spots eventually like I've seen on others. Not too big of a deal to me, but there's nothing like an uncoated blade!

I have to agree. There is nothing wrong with my 5, it is such a great design and I still really love it........ I just happen to grab the 4.7 any time I need a knife.

Absolutely! It was one of the sleeper models for me, just flew under my radar. I should have grabbed one much sooner than I did.

That says a lot about the 4.7, especially given how much you like the 5.
