Hey guys so I recently have just gotten into knives. I bought a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 used and have been trying to sharpen it. I have a lansky system but have been trying to kind of free hand it because the screws on the lansky don't reach far enough. Anyways, it seems to work fine for me to get the edge "sharp enough". I can get it to shave but it seems like it won't get any sharper. It is able to cut printer paper well enough using a slicing motion but won't push cut through the paper. I want to get it sharp enough to direct cut the phonebook paper but it seems like I am stuck. It is frustrating because I can get it sharp fairly easily up to that point. I can progress up to the 1000 grit stone but I can't get it wicked sharp. Is this because of the 1000 grit stone? do I need a strop or a finer grit stone to get that wicked edge? Thanks guys. I know I'm a noob but I need all the help I can get. :)

I'm a bit confused. "kinda freehand"? not really sure what you mean.

The 1000 grit lansky stone loads very easily, so keeping it clean is very important. Also it requires a light touch to keep from just pushing on the edge and rolling it.

Have you done the sharpie trick to make sure you are at the edge?

Don't get too down, its tough to get much sharper than what you are doing, and its going to take a lot of practice. Read lots, there are no simple answers, and not all sharpening methods are compatible.

Read lots, ask specific questions, and get some cheaper knives to practice on. You'll get there. It just may take a while.
