I have been watching reviews on Mora knives and am kind of interested in them.

I want something in carbon steel.

What is a good one to get for general camp use such as cutting rope, whittling, clean the occasional fish.

I'm partial to the #2 with classic red handle. Easy to mod, a nice 4.2 inch blade, good purchase still, and cheap. I stripped the red paint off mine, gave it some gimping on the back, and sealed it with linseed oil, then a patina for the blade with potatoes. After that a paracord wrap over the sheath and a lighter slip attached(again made from the same strand of paracord. It's my current light duty camp knife.

I used a new Morakniv companion in carbon steel on a recent hunting trip. It worked great for breasting out the turkey. The belt clip was sturdy. Despite the rubber grip not being considered "high-end", it handed really well and I was able to maintain a good grip on the knife despite having dirt and blood on my hands.

I'll add that my hunting partner had purchased a custom skinner knife and tried to use it for the same purpose. His knife wasn't long or thin enough to handle the task at hand.

The Companion and the 510 are my favorite Mora's. You honestly cannot go wrong with any of them, and they are inexpensive enough that you can pick up a couple of different patterns to see which you like best.

The companion is my favorite. The classic is not bad, but I like she sheath and grippiness of the companion. As someone already said, they are easy to mod. For a $13 knife, it will suprised you. I frequently carry mine while hiking local trails. Lightweight and unobtrusive.

The Companion provides significant value. I have been surprised in a good way by the knives over and over.

Sandvik 12C27 has converted me from being a carbon steel person. There is all upside and no downside that I can see.

The Companion is the most useful, but you owe it to yourself to try one of the wood-handled ones because they have their own particular style. The 612 is the one I tried first, essentially a No. 2 with a single guard. I left the red paint on mine, because I didn't see any reason to change it. When a dog chewed up the handle I covered the bite marks with a bicycle inner tube. Perhaps a similar improvised repair was the inspiration for the rubber handle of the Companion. Because they are cheap, you can try the different handles and steels to see which you prefer.

Next, you will probably want to try an Opinel, if you haven't already.

Can't go wrong with Mora's, carbon or stainless.

Companions come in both and een have heavy duty models. Luv my Mora Companion HD in the garden.

The Craftline Allround models are very nice models and come in both carbon and stainless.
