New to R.Hinderer club

Again, my opinion - Knife makers will have their favorites and those reasons will be many and varied and I imagine "their secret".
Those people of whom I speak are Custom and semi-custom makers (Rick Hinderer, Chris Reeve, Loveless, etc.)
When you get into the more mass produced knives (yet still of a quality) it is going to be more an availability issue (who can source enough material to accomodate a large run of pieces).
Depending on the particular knifes intended use or market will come into play (More resistance to corrosion lets say).
I know one maker that was adamant about releasing a limited number of higher end knives and he was adamant that they would be ZDP-189
and the price was reflective of that decision (expensive).
I'm sure others will have their take on the subject.

Just to add an analogous reference for clarity. The Automotive world of collectors and hobbiests coined a phrase a number of years back "Super Cars". The litmus test boiled down to specs (speed, braking distance and cornering G's) Obviously Pricetag was North of Holy Crap But...
Everbody held that one factor determined whether the car made the list or not and that was - It had to be able to do 200 mph or more.
Were all the cars that made the list really Super? They were in that sense of the word as for the other meanings, well the people that have that kind of money have opinions too ;)

JasonG, maybe you should search or take your "super steel" question into the general area of BF. Leave specific makers unmentioned and ask for a discussion on the topic. Just a suggestion.

Congratulations, JasonG! A great knife!I have the KM-18 3.5 flipper, will soon have to get None Flipper green G10 20CV )

It feels more private here, and felt easier to ask this question without thousands possibly jumping on me, was also actually looking for a response from RubiconSS as he has high milage on his posts. But thanks for the help... I will direct my questions somewhere else...

Enjoy your HINDERER buddy , sure it will serve you well.

Congratulations Jason g. That is a beautiful knife. Great pictures! Welcome to the family.

That's a beauty!!! Every XM I see it feels like I'm looking at one for the first time!!!!

I'm also new to the club.....I guess the addiction isn't restricted to just a few!!

Welcome to all the new guys, Hope you stick around - new "faces" are always a good thing.

I'm already wanting to sell my whole hard worked collection to replace with hinderer. Didn't realise it would have such a strong hold on me. Is it psychological or are they really just this good? :).

They are that good and the longer you carry and use them the more pronounced that fact becomes.
I rotate a couple of XM's as my EDC's and after a couple years of doing everything I have needed them to do - I can wipe them down/blow some air thru and I defy anyone to tell them apart from a NIB XM. Crazy.
I strop to keep a hair popping edge, doesn't take much more than that.
I told a story not that long ago about an emergency rescue I had to perform to save my beloved cat's (Sam) Life by grabbing my XM and slicing thru my heating plenum in my basement - I posted pics of the unblemished blade - stropped and still slices paper cleanly.
Amazing tools built by a Great Group of People:thumbup:

I agree with Rubi. They are hands down the best folders out there. I have owned many other high end knives including some really nice customs, and none of them ever live up to my hinderers. I am also getting to the point of selling off all of my other knives because they just arent pulling their weight anymore. My suggestion is carry it and use it often and you will see how great they really are.

LOL! I've been poring over my collection for about a week to decide what I can sell and wouldn't miss to support my growing XM habit!

I'm a new guy too, btw. Lately walking a fine line of: eat, sleep, work, play with XMs - I thought my wife's head was going to explode when I brought up planning a trip to either Blade, the USN gathering, or trying for a GTG sometime next year! Traveling from AK requires a bit of strategic planning with work schedules, etc so she's a little beaked that my idea of a vacation is a knife show
